The Eighties singer, 66, who was found by two friends, was put into an induced coma. Her guitarist brother Neil said things were “touch and go” for 24 hours, but since being brought out of the coma she had made “a lot of progress”.

He added: “Her recovery is going to take a while but she is tough and is responding to stimuli and to treatment.

“She’s going to need patience from us and from herself. I’ve already learned that she’s started to show her usual feistiness.”

Coventry-born Hazel’s friend, actress and singer Toyah Wilcox, 63, said: “You are in our prayers, you are in good hands and we love you.”

Hazel had hits with Eighth Day and Will You?, and won a Bafta for playing a rebellious singer in 1980 film Breaking Glass.
