Acclaimed actresses Maureen McCormick (“The Brady Bunch”) and Sharon Lawrence (“NYPD Blue”) star in the Off-Broadway show “Pen Pals,” which is being played at the DR2 Theatre in New York City. #Powerjournalist Markos Papadatos has the recap.

“Pen Pals,” which has garnered critical praise, was written by Michael Griffo and it was eloquently directed by SuzAnne Barabas. Twice a month, there is a rotating cast of actresses for the roles of Bernie and Mags, where no two performances are ever the same.

The play is a celebration of the power of friendship and human connection through handwritten letters that were written over a period that spans nearly five decades.

Ever since they were teenagers in Miss Pinkman’s History class, Bernie (Maureen McCormick) and Mags (Sharon Lawrence) have shared every part of their lives together… This includes their biggest secrets such as first crushes, relationships along the way, family drama, and even medical-related scared.

While they live in two different countries (English and America), Mags and Bernie haven’t met in person, but they are best friends through their intimate letters to one another.

Faith Hill remarked, “Seeing Maureen McCormick and Sharon Lawrence in ‘Pen Pals’ was a beautiful reminder that distance doesn’t weaken real connection; it can deepen it.”

Conclusion

Overall, Maureen McCormick and Sharon Lawrence were stunning together in “Pen Pals.” They commanded the state for the entire 94-minute duration of this show. They had people crying during the emotional moments, and laughing out loud during the witty and funny ones.

Maureen McCormick was lovely and vibrant as Bernie, while Sharon Lawrence was delightful as Mags as always. This marked Sharon Lawrence’s third time playing Mags, and second time with Maureen McCormick (since they last did it together in November). In her first iteration of Pen Pals” as Mags, Lawrence starred opposite “Orange is the New Black” actress Catherine Curtin.

Sharon Lawrence was fabulous as Mags, and she nailed the British accent to the tee. Both actresses worked really well together, and hopefully, they will get the chance to perform this show again at some point in the future.

Their latest run in “Pen Pals” will wrap up tomorrow on Sunday, January 18th. Once again, Maureen McCormick and Sharon Lawrence garner two giant thumbs up for a job well done. Bravo!
