Black Widow: Scarlett Johansson drops first Budapest mission hint

Over the past few Avengers movies, Black Widow (played by Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) have referenced an infamous mission in Budapest. The event happened long before the continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe began, so fans have been left guessing over what actually occurred during that fateful day.

Earlier this week Johansson appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon where she was quizzed about her upcoming film, Black Widow.

During the interview, she was asked if viewers will “finally going to get to know what happened in Budapest”.

The star smiled before confirming: “Yes, you get – you finally get to know what happens in Budapest.”

She added: “I’m nervous about it, it’s like a nervous excitement but I have been – you know, we’ve been sitting on this film for over a year, and it’s been ten years in the making. I’m super proud of it.”

Johansson continued: “People seem to really be responding well to it, which is fantastic.

“It really is a great movie to see in the theatre because it’s super cinematic, explosive, loud, fun.”

The mission was first referenced in Avengers Assemble when Hawkeye said a situation was “just like Budapest all over again”. Natasha replied: “You and I remember Budapest very differently.”

The curious Budapest mission was also referenced in Captain America: The Winter Soldier by Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford), when he told the assassin: “If you do this, none of your past will remain hidden: not Budapest, Osaka, the Children’s Ward.”

The villain has already shown off his prowess with the bow and arrow in the trailers and his skills are extremely reminiscent of Hawkeye’s.

Could the trailer have subtly revealed that the movie’s antagonist is the beginning of Black Widow’s lifelong friendship with her pal?

Black Widow was killed off in Avengers Endgame after she and Clint went to the planet Vormir to find the Soul Stone.

Following Widow’s death, it seems likely Florence Pugh’s character, Yelena, will be taking over as the deadly assassin.

Cate Shortland, director of Black Widow, recently said: “Kevin Feige realised that the audience would expect an origin story so of course, we went in the opposite direction.

“We didn’t know how great Florence Pugh would be. We knew she would be great, but we didn’t know how great.”

She then teased Yelena’s continuing story, adding: “Scarlett is so gracious, like: ‘Oh, I’m handing her the baton.’ So it’s going to propel another female storyline.”

Black Widow is due for release in cinemas and on Disney Plus with Premier Access on July 9.
