Call the Midwife fans will be delighted to know a festive special of the hit BBC One drama will be airing on Christmas Day. The feature-length special will centre around Lucille Anderson (played by Leonie Elliot) and Cyril Robinson’s (Zephryn Taitte) winter wedding in Poplar. However, the countdown to the big day is not smooth sailing as there are a host of mishaps along the way. Ahead of the Christmas episode airing, Lucille actress Leonie revealed why it was so difficult to film the highly anticipated wedding scene.

Leonie opened up about filming her Call the Midwife Christmas wedding ahead of the festive special airing on BBC One.

The 33-year-old star told Express.co.uk wearing the wedding dress for the drama made her feel “really elegant”, but admitted it did not come without its problems.

She explained: “I had a really tight corset on and remember being really upright the whole day and our costume lady always had to be behind me.

“It made me feel very elegant but I was always very far away from everyone – it was a tiring day being elegant.”

The actress detailed a major issue with the custom-made white wedding dress which she experienced while filming.

“It took about 20 minutes to get into the dress and everything so it was very difficult and it was difficult to get out of it,” she revealed.

“And when I did get out of it, it was no teas or coffees, just water.”

Leonie wasn’t allowed to touch any tea, coffee or colourful drinks in case she spilt them on the wedding gown and stained it.

The Call the Midwife Christmas special is always one of the highlights of the Christmas Day television schedule.

Last year, five million viewers tuned into the festive special, and this year looks set to be just as popular.

While caring midwife Lucille is getting ready for Boxing Day wedding to her mechanic fiance, the Nonnatus team are faced with their busiest Christmas Day ever as the maternity home is filled with expectant mums-to-be.

Luckily, Mother Mildred (Miriam Margolyes) returns for the special to assist the incredibly busy team.
