Call The Midwife recently returned to BBC One for the 11th series of the wholesome drama. Fenella Woolgar, who portrays Nonnatus Houses’ Sister Hilda, appeared on Morning Live to delve into the upcoming storylines for the latest series. The 52-year-old also opened up on the awkwardness of filming intimate scenes, before admitting to hosts Kimberly Walsh and Gethin Jones why she was “lucky” to avoid them.

Fenella, who joined Call The Midwife in series eight, discussed her character’s authoritative disposition during Tuesday’s instalment of Morning Live.

Kimberley said: “Is it fair to say that your character is a little on the bossy side?”

Appearing on the talk show video a video link Fenella replied: “I think that is totally accurate but let’s face it if she was a bloke we’d probably flip that and say she was authoritative and decisive.

“Also, nurses are incredibly practical people so they have got to get things done and generally speaking they have to get those things done quickly.

“So yes she is bossy, that’s fair enough but she’s also empathic and she loves to listen to people.”

The series is set in 1967 and Kimberley brought up some of the hard-hitting issues in which the characters have to face in upcoming episodes such as drug addiction and the Holocaust.

Gethin also asked the actor about her love of painting as he noticed various portraits on the wall she was sitting in front of.

Fenella said she is painting her Call The Midwife co-star Helen George’s two children next. Helen plays nurse Trixie Franklin in the drama.

A sympathetic Fenella added: “I think snogging scenes are difficult at the best of times.”

The actor said using perspex made filming intimate moments on screen much harder for her co-stars.

However, she quipped: “But luckily I am a nun in it so I don’t have to do that.”

Gethin smiled: “And you are a brilliant nun too, it’s been great to have you on here this morning.”
