Julie and Sarah chatted with Powerjournalist Markos Papadatos about their “Suspenders Unbuttoned” podcast, where they regularly cover Hallmark and romantic comedy actors and films.

Suspenders Unbuttoned podcast

On the origin of their podcast, Sarah stated, “We met in a fan Facebook group. I randomly started an Instagram account, which is now the Suspenders Unbuttoned account, and from there, we would go live on our Instagram. We would talk about book clubs and ‘When Calls the Heart’.”

“When we did those Instagram live segments, it was our way to connect with people,” Julie said. “We have a lot of people on Instagram Live, and that was our base. It was the connection with people so that became our foundation.

“We also like adding the charity component because that is something that is important to both of us. From there, the podcast evolved. We use a platform that has allowed us to do the podcast live. We never edit and our goal is to continue to connect with people,” Sarah added.

“We came out of a Kevin McGarry fan group,” Julie said. “We are a little unbuttoned in our conversations where we allow them to flow. We want to hear about the actors’ projects but we also want to hear about them as people. We liked hearing our stories and how we got there.”

For their podcast, they enjoyed interviewing such actors as Trevor Donovan, Kevin McGarry, Erin Cahill, and Tyler Hynes, and so many others.

Their dream podcast guest would be to someday have Hallmark actress Lacey Chabert on their podcast.

“Our podcast is about conversations and what the actors that are on are all about, who they are as professionals or people,” Julie remarked. “We want to know who they are.”

The digital age

On being podcasters in the digital age, Sarah said, “We don’t know any different. It is proof that you can make connections digitally. Our world is so different when I grew up. It is really fun to get to know people this way. It doesn’t take us away from our daily lives.”

“I think it’s really fun to be able to connect with people that you didn’t think you would be able to ever connect with,” Sarah added.

“For us, it’s a win-win,” Julie said. “For us, it works because we wouldn’t be able to do this without the digital age. There is so much accessibility these days. We love it and we love the connections. We love to bring a very positive environment.”

RomaDrama Live!

They enjoyed being a part of this year’s RomaDrama Live! event in West Palm Beach, Florida. “RomaDrama was amazing,” Sarah exclaimed. “Gabrielle and Sara developed a sense of community there. You have this community of people that have met on social media and when you go there, it is like you are meeting all your friends there. The actors are a part of that community too. It was like a big family fest.”

“The connections were the most amazing thing to watch and to unfold in front of you,” Julie admitted. “Being a part of RomaDrama gave us a different connection. We were able to connect with other people that run fan pages as well. Our connections came in so many different levels.”
