Liu was the rising star of the film, receiving critical acclaim for his performance as the legendary kung-fu master. But in a new interview, he has revealed he is worried for the future of his career.

Speaking on the First We Feast YouTube channel, Liu ate hot wings with its host Sean Evans.

Evans brought up being “typecast” as “the wings guy” by his friends, sparking a debate with the Chinese-Canadian star on his recent success as an Asian superhero.

He said: “That’s so funny that you say that because my fear in this movie and its success – and of course it’s been very successful and I’m very happy about it – is that it will perpetuate this kind of narrative that Asian people can only lead martial arts movies. Which is not true, right?”

Liu stars as the MCU’s first-ever on-screen Asian superhero. However, the character was originally rooted in some culturally insensitive origins in the original comic books.

These origins were addressed in the film, with the return of Trevor (Ben Kingsley), who admitted his actions in Iron Man 3 were wrong.

READ MORE: <a data-link-tracking=”InArticle|Link” href=”https://www.express.co.uk/entertainment/films/1530398/shang-chi-simu-liu-costume-change-marvel” data-name=”‘I fought it’ Shang-Chi star Simu Liu called for character change” target=”_blank”>’I fought it’ Shang-Chi star Simu Liu called for character change

Liu went on: “Of course it’s something that, you know…” He then raised his hands in the style of a martial arts attack, adding: “I don’t want people to constantly come up to me and be like: ‘Hey! I bet I could kick your a*s!’ So, I get that, I feel that – wanting to be known for other things.” Liu has also been openly excited about becoming Marvel’s first-ever Asian superhero. He told Jimmy Fallon earlier this year: “It was a dream come true because growing up, I had been such a big fan of superheroes. I think I loved what superheroes represented, hope and unlimited possibility.”

Liu went on to add: “Everyone, regardless of the colour of their skin or where they come from deserving to see themselves represented in that way.

”What excited me most about this movie is that we were able to provide that for kids and I could be something that I never had.”

Although the star is keen to expand his filmography, he will surely be making a return to the Shang-Chi series.

Not only did the movie make more than $400 million at the box office, but it also cemented the character into the future of the series.

DON’T MISS…
<a data-link-tracking=”InArticle|Link” href=”https://www.express.co.uk/entertainment/films/1530398/shang-chi-simu-liu-costume-change-marvel” data-name=”‘I fought it’ Shang-Chi star Simu Liu called for character change” target=”_blank”>’I fought it’ Shang-Chi star Simu Liu called for character change [NEWS]
<a data-link-tracking=”InArticle|Link” href=”https://www.express.co.uk/entertainment/films/1522334/marvel-release-date-black-widow-film-Loki-series-MCU-Disney” data-name=”Marvel phase four: All the release dates for new MCU films and Disney+” target=”_blank”>Marvel phase four: All the release dates for new MCU films and Disney+ [INSIGHT]

The final moments of Shang-Chi showed the titular hero being welcomed into the Avengers by Wong.

Before that, he had a chat with Bruce Banner/The Hulk and Captain Marvel. Recently, deleted scenes from the movie were released alongside the Blu-ray and DVD, revealing some unexpected backstory for Shang-Chi’s family.

One clip revealed that Shang-Chi’s father, Wenwu (Tony Leung) adopted Razorfist as his son.

This meant Shang-Chi’s foe was actually his adopted brother all along.

However, as this was cut from the film, it may no longer be a canon fact.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is available on Disney Plus now.

Fri, 03 Dec 2021 13:01:41 +0000 Callum Crumlish

The actor has played the super spy for 15 years over five movies, but he recently explained it was his time to move on. With that, the race to become the next 007 is on, and nearing the top of the board is Superman star Henry Cavill.

While Cavill is not quite the favourite to become Bond, news of him being considered for the 007 casting keeps cropping up. And now the star has given some insight into what is going on.

The Bond candidate recently appeared on The Graham Norton Show where he was quizzed over becoming the next bond.

He replied: “I would definitely have a conversation. From what I understand there are very early conversations happening at the top but there is no list as such.”

Word on the street is a number of British stars are in the running to become the next Bond, including Cavill, as well as Tom Hardy, Regé-Jean Page and Loki star Tom Hiddleston.

READ MORE: <a data-link-tracking=”InArticle|Link” href=”https://www.express.co.uk/entertainment/films/1530559/James-Bond-Daniel-Craig-Thor-Marvel-Avengers” data-name=”James Bond: Why Daniel Craig ‘turned down playing Thor after offer'” target=”_blank”>James Bond: Why Daniel Craig ‘turned down playing Thor after offer'

At the moment, it is anyone’s game to become the next Bond. But Cavill was also keen to point out how “intense” his history is. He told the talk show host: “Growing up was intense – we were living on the edge of survival most of the time. To give you an example, my dad came home from work one day and asked my mother why the wallpaper had changed, and she simply said: ‘It is easier to clean the blood off this one!'” With a smirk he added: “There was a lot of rough and tumble!” But could this “rough-and-tumble” Hollywood star take over from the almost brutal Daniel Craig?

Both the Bridgerton hunk and Venom antihero have an impressive 4/1 on becoming Bond next.

Ladbrokes’ Alex Apati said: “No fewer than eight names stand a genuine chance of replacing Daniel Craig as things stand. Regé-Jean Page and Tom Hardy may lead the way in the betting, but make no mistake about it, the race to play 007 is far from over.”

Alex is right, the British heartthrobs aren’t guaranteed the role just yet, and there are a number of big stars hot on their heels.

Cavill is currently neck-and-neck with James Norton and Tom Hopper, of Game of Thrones fame.

Just behind is The Suicide Squad hero Idris Elba with 8/1. The London-based star has long been a favourite with fans of the franchise.

Eternals hero Richard Madden is also in the running with 8/1 – but would he give up his Marvel spot to become the next 007?

James Bond No Time To Die is available for digital rental now, and is still in cinemas.

The Graham Norton Show airs tonight on BBC One.

Fri, 03 Dec 2021 11:41:00 +0000 Callum Crumlish

Die Hard: UK poll settles if Bruce Willis classic is a Christmas movie once and for all https://www.express.co.uk/entertainment/films/1530519/Die-Hard-Christmas-movie-poll-Bruce-Willis
    https://www.express.co.uk/entertainment/films/1530519/Die-Hard-Christmas-movie-poll-Bruce-Willis

Die Hard was released in the summer of 1988 and stars Bruce Willis in a violent terrorist hostage situation. Not exactly full of festive fun and cheer, but the movie is set on Christmas Eve with a ton of references to the holiday. Now, over three decades on and YouGov have polled over 2000 adults from across the UK to determine if Die Hard truly is a Christmas movie or not.

Just like Brexit, it’s a close call with the UK divided over the result. It turns out that 47 per cent of voters believe Die Hard isn’t a Christmas movie and 44 per cent do.

There was also a bigger disagreement between sexes, with 50 per cent of men saying the Bruce Willis action classic is a Christmas movie compared to just 37 per cent of women.

The survey also found that Brits are just as likely to debate Die Hard’s genre as they are over whether or not to serve Brussels sprouts with Christmas dinner or whether or not to watch The Queen’s Speech on Christmas Day.

So why can’t UK fans agree? The main reason is that 72 per cent of those who believe the film is a Christmas movie pointed out that the story is set during a Christmas party.

READ MORE: <a data-link-tracking=”InArticle|Link” href=”https://www.express.co.uk/entertainment/films/1400678/alan-rickman-die-hard-hans-gruber-birthday-bruce-willis-death-script-interview-watch” data-name=”Alan Rickman Die Hard: Star nearly declined film after reading script” target=”_blank”>Alan Rickman Die Hard: Star nearly declined film after reading script

But on the other side, almost 50 per cent of those who don’t think Die Hard is a Christmas movie think that just because it’s set during the festive season doesn’t make it part of the genre.

And 37 per cent of this group said the reason the film isn’t a Christmas movie is that it’s already part of the action category.

Film critic James King weighed in saying: “Die Hard is a Christmas movie now but it didn’t start out as one. Back in 1988 when it was released in the summer, I don’t think anyone thought it was a festive film. Sure it had a seasonal setting but it was hardly warm and cuddly.

“But over time the fans have embraced its Christmas background and reinterpreted it as a yuletide classic. That’s what’s great about brilliant films: they don’t just have to be one thing.”

Alongside Willis, the commercial saw De’voreaux White and Clarence Gilyard Jr reprising their roles as Argyle and Theo from the first movie.

The storyline saw Hans Gruber’s former tech specialist and others seeking to kill McClane as he sought out a new car battery.

Before Disney bought Fox there were plans for a Die Hard prequel-sequel called McClane that has since been cancelled. The storyline would have seen Willis portray his NYPD cop in present day alongside a younger actor playing him in the 1970s. But who knows, maybe Disney will reboot Die Hard in the future.

Die Hard is streaming now on Disney+, alongside its four sequels.

Fri, 03 Dec 2021 00:01:00 +0000 George Simpson
