Drew Shaulson chatted with #Powerjournalist Markos Papadatos about his new health fitness app and motivations.

CARMA app

On his new app, he remarked, “I think one of the big things that I really want people to know is that I created an app, CARMA, to help people really just learn healthy habits and achieve what they want to achieve without any of the downsides of very common pitfalls in the fitness industry of like being obsessive, burning out and just not being happy with yourself throughout the I think that’s what I designed it to do, and I want to really help people improve their lives.”

Drew listed the launch of his CARMA app as a career-defining moment. “That really changed the way I think about everything,” he admitted.

Daily motivations

Regarding his daily motivations, he said, “The deepest motivation that I have is to prove to myself that I am a hard worker and that I can burn for something. Also, that I can achieve anything I set my mind to. There are smaller missions along the way. I also think that education has some issues that I am interested in solving one day. The truth is most people fight their internal issues more than their external ones.”

“I want to prove to myself that I can fight adversity and win every time I go against it and that I can be tough,” he added.

Mister USA

On competing for Mister USA, Drew said, “It’s exciting. It feels good. I haven’t really done anything like this before in my life. It should be interesting!”

He is an alum of University of Pennsylvania. “It feels good to be repping Pennsylvania; that’s where I went to school and I spent four years there,” he said. “It is very near and dear to my heart so I can’t complain.”

Advocacy for Mister USA

Regarding his advocacy, he said, “One of my biggest missions is changing a lot of things in the fitness industry about their perception of physique and fitness and whether what it looks like to be fit rather than what it really means to be fit, both from a physical standpoint and a mental standpoint.”

Stage of his life

On the title of the current chapter of his life, he said with a sweet laugh, “Becoming Drew.”

Why he should win Mister USA

When asked why he should win Mister USA, he responded, “I think I bring something that most people don’t, which is the well-roundedness of not just being someone who’s physically fit, you know, who has done competitions in fitness, won competitions (5:31) and weightlifting, CrossFit, stuff like that. Someone who burns for something and has a message, but also just has a deep educational background and ability and demonstration of achieving high level in education, in business, and in life. I think those are on display.”

“I’m probably the only one that has learned from scratch how to code and build their own app and done things such as self-starting and doing things to try and change the way the world works,” he said.

Success

“I think the deepest, truest version of success is you’re able to change someone else’s life, but change an entire industry, like not just one person, but everyone, and if you can make that kind of shift, I think I won’t be happy until I truly change an entire industry’s line of thinking.”

Message for his supporters

For his supporters, he expressed, “I appreciate you giving me the ability to just be myself and try my hardest to inspire and do my best to share my message with you.”

Closing thoughts

He remarked, “I just want people to see that they can get out of their comfort zone no matter what they do. At the end of the day, it doesn’t change the way people think about you, but who cares? Like you just do what you want to do. Go out and do life, step out of your comfort zone, make connections and just be the person who you don’t care about anyone else seeing you be.”
