James Bond star hits out at sexuality scene in No Time To Die

A lot of new information was revealed in the final James Bond film starring Daniel Craig: No Time To Die. Although a lot of unexpected events occurred concerning 007 himself, one of the more out-of-the-blue comments came from the character’s quartermaster, Q. During one scene, Bond visited Q’s flat where he was preparing a dinner for a date. In a throwaway comment, Q announced: “He’ll be here in 20 minutes,” confirming he was gay.

Despite only being a quick pronoun, this was monumental for the Bond franchise. Q’s sexuality being addressed was a first for the series, as he has become the first openly gay character in a Bond film in 60 years on the big screen. But Q actor Ben Whishaw himself was not as satisfied as the writers might have been with their subtle nod to the gay community.

In a new interview Whishaw, who is gay, confirmed that other than one text, “no one has given me any feedback [on the scene]”. He added: “So I’m really interested in these questions. And I’m very happy to admit maybe some things were not great about that [creative] decision.” (Via Guardian)

Whishaw explained how TV writer Russel T Davies was the only person to send him a positive message about the scene.

He then revealed: “I suppose I don’t feel it was forced upon the studio. That was not my impression of how this came about. I think it came from a good place.”

The British actor recalled being shown a script for the scene during a one-on-one meeting with Bond boss Barbara Broccoli. On the script, he said: “I think I thought: ‘Are we doing this, and then doing nothing with it?’ I remember, perhaps, feeling that was unsatisfying.”

He also thought long and hard about whether he ought to have questioned the moment.

Em added: “honestly the best bit of the film was finding out Q is gay <3” (sic)

No Time To Die acted as an agent of change for the Bond movies, as it marked the final appearance of Craig as the titular hero. In fact, a lot of speculation is now being focussed on who the next actor will be to take on the role.

A massive number of British stars are currently in the running, but at the top of the Bond odds is the Bridgerton star himself: Regé-Jean Page. The Netflix star currently has an impressive 11/4 on becoming James Bond (odd via Ladbrokes).

He is currently just ahead of some fan favourites, including Tom Hardy. Hardy currently has a strong 7/2 – but will he be able to become a favourite once again?
