As such, Ofcom is calling on other broadband companies to introduce similar discount plans for struggling households. A number of the biggest providers, including the likes of Sky, EE, Plusnet, Shell Energy, TalkTalk and Vodafone, do not yet offer plans specifically for Universal Credit recipients.

The regulatory body also wants to see better promotion from the companies that already offer discounted broadband plans to combat the low sign-up rates.

In its latest report on affordability, Ofcom revealed that some 1.1 million households (around 5 percent of all homes nationwide) are struggling to afford their home broadband. When looking at the lowest-income households in the UK, that rises to one in 10 homes.
