Millions of Sonos users get free upgrade that offers a new way to listen to content

The BBC has just announced that it’s making its popular BBC Sounds service more user-friendly for Sonos owners. This big upgrade, which will be pushed out in the coming weeks, aims to make it easier to find shows, music and podcasts right from within the Sonos app.

That should make it far more simple to play content from this feature-packed platform on any Sonos speakers dotted around homes. Around 3.6 million people access BBC Sounds each week so it’s sure to be a welcomed update for fans who tune in to this live and on-demand content which includes local stations, music mixes curated by experts, artists and special guests, and a wide range of award-winning podcasts.

Just like the BBC Sounds web, TV and mobile apps, this new experience lets listeners browse by categories like True Crime, Feel Good Tunes and Life Stories, find the latest shows, podcasts and mixes they’ve subscribed to on BBC Sounds, and get recommendations based on previous listening when signed into their BBC account.

It also lets people pick up where they left off with the Continue Listening feature and they can see what track they’re currently listening to live.

Speaking about the update Jonathan Wall, Controller of BBC Sounds, says: “We want BBC Sounds to be available wherever and whenever people want to listen, and this is another way to make sure people can enjoy our audio however they choose. From firm favourites to new discoveries, we’re giving our listeners even easier access to our brilliant selection of radio, music mixes and podcasts.”

BBC Sounds is available to preview in the Sonos app now and will be officially released over the coming weeks for listeners in the UK.

Along with this update to the app, Sonos recently started to roll out an upgrade to its speakers designed to boost audio when watching blockbusters at home. For the first time, a number of the smart audio brand’s speakers will support the popular DTS Digital Surround format for surround sound when watching cinematic boxsets and Hollywood movies on the sofa. The speakers receiving the surround sound upgrade include Sonos Arc, Sonos Playbase, Playbar or Sonos Beam.
