Pirates of the Caribbean: Jack Sparrow returns – but without Johnny Depp

Over the past year, Johnny Depp fought in court against a British publication that claimed he was a “wife-beater”. During this case his ex-wife, Amber Heard, also testified about her experience with the actor. Following this, Depp was asked to step down from his role of Gellert Grindewald in the Harry Potter series Fantastic Beasts. At the moment, nothing has been announced regarding his spot in the Disney series, Pirates of the Caribbean.

This week, during the annual video game event the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Microsoft announced their new slate of titles coming out in the next 12 months for the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.

One of their first announcements came from game company Rare, who made smash-hit title Sea of Thieves.

They announced the game’s next expansion, A Pirate’s Life, included Captain Jack Sparrow and Davy Jones.

Jack Sparrow’s likeness is taken from the Pirates films, but not all of Depp is present in digital form.

The cartoon Jack Sparrow sounds remarkably like Depp, but website Hitc confirmed he is not the voice actor for the video game character.

This is the first arrival of Jack Sparrow since the last Pirates film – Salazar’s Revenge – however, it is the first time Jack Sparrow has not been completely taken on by Depp.

Instead, the website claimed the voice actor could be Jared Butler, a voice actor who has appeared during other iterations of Jack Sparrow in Disney projects when Depp wasn’t available.

This could be the final time fans of the series see Depp as the character, following comments made by executive producer of the franchise Jerry Bruckheimer.

Bruckheimer spoke to Collider last year about the next Pirates movie, which has yet to be announced.

On it, he said: “We’re working on a draft right now and hopefully we’ll get it shortly and give it to Disney and hopefully they’ll like it. We don’t know. We’ve been working on it for a little bit.”

Talking specifically about bringing Depp back, the producer admitted: “The one we’re developing right now, we’re not sure quite what Johnny’s role is going to be.”

Bruckheimer added: “So, we’re going to have to see.”

Despite these comments, Hollywood and Disney insider Daniel Richtman claimed Bruckheimer is looking to bring Depp back to the series.

The leaker said Bruckheimer “hasn’t given up” on Depp returning to the series “and will continued to lobby for [him] to make an appearance, no matter how small it may be”.

In the meantime, rumours have surfaced about a reboot of the series hitting cinemas in the near future starring Harley Quinn star Margot Robbie.

The Australian actor herself confirmed these rumours during an interview last year.

Robbie confessed she was in the next Pirates film, which is being penned by Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson, before adding it would be filled with “girl power”.

She went on: “It’s too early to talk about it. I love Christina, obviously.

“I’m not a producer on Pirates, so I’ll sit back and kind of wait for the process. We’re really, really excited at the prospect of adding obviously a very key female element to that world.”

The Pirates of the Caribbean films are available on Disney Plus now.

Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life is due for release on June 22, 2021.
