There is no doubt that Spider-Man: No Way Home is the most hyped Marvel movie since Avengers Endgame. With five Sony movie villains in Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Sandman, Lizard and Electro returning and rumours that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parkers are showing up, it’s hardly surprising. And now the Tom Holland blockbuster has smashed the likes of Avengers Infinity War and Star Wars The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker in terms of first-day pre-sales across the pond.

Erik Davis of US movie theatre website Fandango reported: “JUST IN: Spider-Man: No Way Home the biggest 1st day of pre-sales at Fandango since Avengers Endgame.

“It only took TWO HOURS for it to break the 2021 record, previously held by Black Widow.

“Other films it topped include AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and both LAST JEDI & RISE OF SKYWALKER.

“Make no mistake, Spider-Man is once again the biggest and most anticipated property when it comes to comic book movies.”

Davis added: “With no Avengers movies on the table and a lot of new characters being introduced, Spider-Man rules the playing field.”

Tickets for Spider-Man: No Way Home are being touted on websites like eBay for extraordinary sums of as much as $25,000 after fans crashed the AMC cinemas website on the first day of pre-sales.

According to Deadline, Kentucky exhibitor Rick Roman said: “I have not seen anything like this since Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

“Once the tickets went on sale, they went through the roof.  I added more screens.  Thank you Sony.”

Spider-Man: No Way Home’s opening weekend is expected to be over $100 million, which would place the Marvel epic in the top five December debut of all time.

As for what’s next for Holland, Sony producer Amy Pascal has said she’s planning on making another Spider-Man trilogy with the incumbent Peter Parker.

However, Sony insiders told The Hollywood Reporter that nothing is yet official. But assuming the threequel makes north of a $1 billion in a post-pandemic world maybe it will be sooner rather than later.

Spider-Man: No Way Home hits UK cinemas on December 15 and in US movie theatres on December 17, 2021.
