The Apprentice star speaks out on ‘hostile’ filming environment

The Apprentice made a dramatic return to BBC One last month for series 16 following a two-year break due to the coronavirus pandemic. A selection of contestants have been fired by Lord Alan Sugar following savage dressing downs in the boardroom. With the competition heating up, former candidate Conor Gilsenan has revealed how “chaotic” the show can be as contestants continue to fight to become Lord Sugar’s next business partner.

So far, five hungry hopefuls have been sent packing by Lord Sugar on the business show, with Francesca Kennedy Wallbank being the latest candidate to be fired after misspelling ‘Arctic’ in the title of a video game.

The mathematician ended the girls’ winning streak by becoming the first female candidate to be sent home.

Next week, the remaining candidates will be in heading to north Wales where they will have to run their own highland railway, quarry tour and zip line.

As always, the two teams will be under the close watch of Lord Sugar’s trusted aides Baroness Karren Brady and Tim Campbell, who is filling in for The Apprentice favourite Claude Littner as he recovers following surgery.

Ahead of the episode airing, sales executive and former professional rugby player Conor Gilsenan opened up about how heated it gets during the process.

The 28-year-old was the second candidate to be fired by Lord Sugar after the boys’ team lost a children’s electric toothbrush challenge.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk about his experience on the BBC programme, Conor explained: “It’s a very hostile environment and it’s a simulation, it’s a game and you can’t take the outcome too seriously.”

He candidly said: “A lot of this stuff is not transferable into business in my opinion, but that may have changed if I stayed in the process for longer.

He explained: “We all know what we signed up for, [Lord Sugar] has to bring someone back and there was a one in three chance that I’d get brought it as I made a lot of decisions.”

Conor was taken back into the boardroom by project manager Aaron Willis and fellow teammate Nick Showering.

The former candidate said he tried his best to be respectful to Lord Sugar and his aides when he was shut down by Baroness Brady in the boardroom.

He revealed: “It was a bit frustrating as I felt the guys’ app was better. Then Karren Brady cut across me and was like, ‘That’s what you think’, and I’m not going to challenge her.”
