The new variant is spreading the most rapidly across the southeast of England, with London, Kent and other parts of the southeast put into a new Tier 4 lockdown beginning on December 20.
Britain has been one of the worst-hit European countries – with more than 67,000 deaths linked to coronavirus and more than 2 million cases reported.
Hundreds of deaths are being reported every day across the UK, with the largest outbreaks currently in the south.
Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland all have lower infection rates than England, which has been the worst-hit country in Europe so far.
