Kate Smurthwaite appeared on Jeremy Vine on 5 as the panel debated whether or not Camilla should become Queen Consort following the Queen’s “sincere wish” she becomes one. After debating the issue with several callers, Ms Smirthwaite laughed at the absurdity of the hate and believed if people had an opinion over who should be head of state then they are actually against the monarchy. She explained under a monarchy, the “proletariat” does not have a say over who is head of state and if they wanted to have an elected figure then they should copy what is used in countries all across the world.

Speaking on Jeremy Vine on 5, Ms Smurthwaite addressed the criticisms against Camilla and rubbished the mentality behind them.

She told the programme: “I think it’s harsh to sort of lay Diana’s death at Camilla’s door.

“But I also think that I love the fact that people have got such strong opinions and that’s wonderful, like that she should, she shouldn’t, I find it very amusing that in 2022 we’re having a conversation about who’s an adulterer on national television.

“The issue here though is this, if you have an opinion about who should or shouldn’t be head of state then actually you’re against a monarchy.

“Because the whole point of a monarchy is you don’t get a choice.

“You are the proletariat, you are the lower classes, the riffraff, whatever you want to call it, you don’t get to say.

“That’s the whole point of a monarchy, we don’t get a say, if you want to have your opinion, there’s a solution.

“We go to a public [vote] for an elected head of state and you know what, you can vote for Camilla, you can vote for William.”

The Queen wrote in a statement marking her Jubilee on Sunday: “When, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes king, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me.”

The Queen also reflected on her family and support network in the letter and added: “I am fortunate to have had the steadfast and loving support of my family.

“I was blessed that in Prince Philip I had a partner willing to carry out the role of consort and unselfishly make the sacrifices that go with it. It is a role I saw my own mother perform during my father’s reign.”

However, the announcement of Camilla becoming Queen Consort has garnered criticism as it had been expected she would only become Princess Consort out of respect for Princess Diana.

A rolling YouGov poll that monitors public opinion on the matter found 44 percent of respondents want Camilla to be Princess Consort rather than Queen Consort.

Only 14 percent want Camilla to be Queen Consort with graphs showing public opinion on the matter has hardly changed.

Now that the Queen has clarified the Royal Family’s position, Camilla will be known as “Queen Camilla” when Prince Charles takes the throne.

A Clarence House spokesman said the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall were “touched and honoured”.

In a statement from Prince Charles, he wrote: “We are deeply conscious of the honour represented by my mother’s wish.

“As we have sought together to serve and support Her Majesty and the people of our communities, my darling wife has been my own steadfast support throughout.

“The year of this unprecedented Platinum Jubilee brings an opportunity for us all to come together in celebrating the service of The Queen, by whose example we will continue to be led in the years to come.”
