Broadcaster Gyles Brandreth appeared on Monday’s instalment of This Morning where he spoke to hosts Rochelle Humes and Phillip Schofield about family quarrels. Phillip revealed a recent study suggested people are most likely to row with their mother-in-law over other family members. This prompted Gyles, 73, to admit his wife once had to stop him from telling offensive Les Dawson jokes to his mother-in-law.

During the This Morning interview, Phillip told Gyles: “Apparently the most common family row is with your mother-in-law. People row more with their mother-in-law than any other family member according to The New Arizona State University study.

“They obviously haven’t gotten anything better to do and thought, ‘So what shall we study?’

“I have actually got the most amazing mother-in-law who I adore.”

However, Gyles replied: “And I have the most amazing wife because I left the house holding my Les Dawson joke book.

“My wife grabbed it from me and said, ‘You are not going in there to try any of Les Dawson’s mother-in-law jokes, you really are not as you’ll be cancelled before lunch.’

“So I have nothing to say on this.”

The late comedian Les Dawson made a career out of jokes at his mother-in-law’s expense.

The father-of-four hosted a reboot of the show in 1990 and he was popular both on the small screen and on the radio before his untimely death.

His daughter Charlotte Dawson, who has appeared on Channel 5’s Celebs on the Farm, recently opened up on her father’s death.

The 29-year-old reality star was only eight months old when her father died from a heart attack, aged 62, after being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

Charlotte, who recently welcomed her son Noah, recently shared an update on her own health journey linked to her father.
