Your Sky Q box could FINALLY get the last app missing from its menu

Sky Q has a pretty comprehensive selection of apps, including big hitters like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, and Disney+. In recent updates, Sky has added less traditional applications to its set-top box too, like at-home fitness streaming services like Fiit and Peloton, making Sky Q even more of a one-stop-shop for everything you want to stream on your telly. However, there is still one prominent service still missing in action. 

Apple TV+ is one of the newest streaming services on the market. It boasts a number of exclusive films, including the award-winning Boys State, Tom Hanks thriller Greyhound, Billie Eilish documentary The World’s A Little Blurry, as well as shows like Ted Lasso, Mythic Quest, and The Morning Show. Not only that, but Apple’s streaming app offers access to any previous iTunes purchases or rentals associated with your account.

On Fire TV, Samsung Smart TV and other popular platforms, this enables people with iTunes libraries packed with movies and shows to watch them on other platforms for the first time. Until now, those purchases were restricted to Apple-built devices, like an iPhone or Apple TV streaming box.

And soon, the Apple TV+ app could make its way to Sky Q too.

That’s according to a new rumour posted on Reddit. The tipster, known as MrKatUK who claims to be a current Sky employee, claims that Sky is already briefing those inside the company about the Apple-branded streaming option coming to its set-top boxes.

“Apple TV app coming to Sky Q Source: I work for sky. It was in one of our training videos last week,” the Reddit user posted on the Apple TV forum.

The post was shared two months ago, so we’d hope to hear something from Sky Q soon. It’s possible the satellite broadcaster is holding the rollout of Apple TV+ so that coincides with the launch of a new show exclusive to the platform. The second season of the award-winning feel-good comedy Ted Lasso starts airing weekly from July 23, 2021, which could be a good chance for Sky to shout about the arrival of Apple TV+ on its set-top box. Elsewhere, Apple has confirmed the hotly-anticipated second series of its multi-award-winning drama The Morning Show will return this autumn – another good opportunity for Sky.

It’s unclear whether Sky Q will be bundled with Apple TV+ in some bundles. Sky customers can add a Netflix subscription to their monthly bill, bringing everything into a single Direct Debit each month, and unlock deeper integration with the streaming service on their set-top box. This includes universal search across the two services, so there’s no chance that you’ll accidentally rent something from the Sky Store that’s included in your Netflix subscription as both options will be shown side-by-side when searching for the title.

The same deal is available with Disney+ too. However, there’s no such integration with Prime Video, with users signing in with their existing Amazon account to watch.

As always, there’s no guarantee the Reddit tipster was correct, so take this with a little pinch of salt too. It’s possible that Sky was using a mock-up image for internal briefings and doesn’t actually have plans to launch an Apple TV+ app to its box anytime soon.
