Linda Prefontaine remembers her late brother, track and field legend Steve Prefontaine on “The Motivation Show” podcast, which is hosted by Eli Marcus. #Powerjournalist Markos Papadatos has the recap.

Steve Prefontaine will go down in history as one of the greatest athletes that track and field has ever known.

Steve was posthumously inducted into the following Halls of Fame: the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 1983, the National Track and Field Hall of Fame, the National High School Track and Field Hall of Fame, the National Distance Running Hall of Fame in 2000, and the Collegiate Athlete Hall of Fame in 2022.

These well-deserved honors and accolades recognize his extraordinary career as a legendary American distance runner, who set numerous American records and became an icon of the sport before his tragic death in a car accident on May 30th, 1975. His influence, memory and relevance is as important as ever, even 50+ years after his passing.

In his four years at Oregon, Steve Prefontaine never lost a collegiate (NCAA) race at three miles, 5,000 meters, six miles, or 10,000 meters.

In this informative and inspirational informed conversation, Linda discusses what it was like growing up with Steve and what distinguished Steve from the other runners, as well as what made him a champion.

Linda discussed the influence that Bill Bowerman and Bill Dellinger had on Steve’s life as well. They spoke about Steve’s interests and causes that were dear to him outside of track and field.

They opened up about why Steve is “larger than life” and still talked about five decades after his passing. Linda shared her thoughts on how she thought Steve felt after finishing fourth in the 1972 Olympics in the 5,000 meters race (one spot away from the bronze medal) and how he altered his training as a result.
