Firefighter Ben Church chatted with #Powerjournalist Markos Papadatos about being a part of the 2026 Australian Firefighters Calendar.

The Australian Firefighters Calendar is an Australian owned and operated company. Although they are not a charity per se, they have donated $3.5 million to both animals and people in need since 1993.

How did it feel to be a part of the 2026 Australian Firefighters Calendar?

Honestly, it’s a bit surreal every year. You rock up expecting a few happy snaps, and suddenly you’re oiled up and posing next to a puppy thinking, “Crikey, how did I end up here?” But it’s a great laugh, and knowing it’s all for a good cause makes it something really special to be part of.

It supports so many charities; why are they so important to you?

As firefighters, we see firsthand how much some families and communities struggle after tough times. These charities help people get back on their feet, so being able to use the calendar to give back feels like we’re making a difference beyond the fireground.

Plus, helping out animals? That’s always a winner in my books.

How long have you been a firefighter and what do you love most about the profession?

I’ve been on the job for 8 years now, and it’s still the best gig going. Every day’s different, the team’s like family, and when the tones drop, there’s no feeling like it. You get to help people on their worst day — and that’s a privilege, not a job.

What’s it like working with director David Rogers?

Dave’s a legend. He’s like the dad of the calendar — he keeps everything running, cracks a few dad jokes, and somehow convinces a bunch of blokes to smile while covered in baby oil and holding a puppy. It’s chaos, but organized chaos, and he’s the bloke who makes it all happen.

How many years have you been doing the calendar?

This will be my fifth year, and I still pinch myself every time. It started as a bit of fun and now it’s become something I really look forward to each year. The friendships, the travel, the stories — it’s more than a photo shoot; it’s a family.

What motivates you each day as a firefighter?

It’s simple — I love the job and the people I work with. There’s a sense of purpose when you put on that uniform. Whether it’s training, mentoring the younger firefighters, or rolling out to a call, it’s about teamwork and giving your best every time.

What do your plans for the future include?

Keep growing, keep learning, and keep giving back. I’m always working on new rescue training projects and expanding my business on the side, but I’ll always be a firefighter at heart. And who knows — maybe a sixth calendar one day if they’ll still have me!

What does the word success mean to you?

For me, success isn’t about fancy titles or flash cars — it’s about waking up happy with what you’re doing, making a difference, and surrounding yourself with good people. If you can do that and have a few laughs along the way, you’re doing alright.

What would you like to tell our readers about the 2026 Australian Firefighters Calendar… What’s the one thing you want them to get out of it?

The 2026 calendar isn’t just about the photos — it’s about heart. Every image represents the charities we support and the mateship that makes Aussie firefighters who we are. And hey, if it brings a smile to someone’s face (or a few cheeky blushes), then mission accomplished!
