A GoFundMe campaign was established to help Rhode Island father protect his young daughter after tragic loss. #Powerjournalist Markos Papadatos has the scoop.
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched in support of Scott Naso, a Rhode Island law enforcement officer of nearly 20 years, as he fights to protect his 4-year-old daughter, Laila, following the sudden death of his wife, Sherry Naso, and an ongoing, high-stakes family court case.
Sherry died April 2024 after her breast cancer, once believed to be in remission silently metastasized. Her death left Scott as the sole caregiver to their then 2-year-old daughter while he was still reeling from profound grief.
During those initial weeks of mourning, Scott and Laila’s lives took a sudden turn, evolving into a complex and emotionally exhausting legal battle that continues today.
Shortly after Sherry’s death, Scott became increasingly concerned for Laila’s safety and well-being following medical decisions made by her maternal grandparents, Dr. Jila Khorsand and Dr. Siavash Ghoreishi, both physicians, without his knowledge or consent. On the day Sherry died, Laila was administered medication via syringe, her maternal Grandmother held her shoulders down while the maternal Grandfather administered the medicine against her will. Laila immediately threw up, crying and visibly distressed.
Scott brought his daughter to her pediatrician and the Rhode Island court records indicate that Laila, then 2 years old, had been prescribed medications at a rate Scott says was roughly 15 times the national average for children her age. After that discovery Scott restricted all contact with her grandparents, Scott reports that Laila has been healthy and has required no prescriptions.
Despite these concerns and the steps Scott took to safeguard Laila, he now faces an extended legal battle in Rhode Island family court, as Laila’s maternal grandparents are seeking court-ordered visitation.
The case is scheduled to resume for a full week in late February, with proceedings expected to continue into March. Navigating this process has required ongoing legal representation, court filings, and expert consultation, placing an extraordinary financial and emotional burden on Scott during an already devastating period of his life.
The newly established GoFundMe campaign exists to help Scott continue advocating for Laila’s safety, stability, and best interests. Funds raised will be used exclusively for:
- Ongoing legal representation
- Court and filing expenses
- Expert consultations necessary to protect Laila’s rights and well-being
Scott has since exhausted his personal savings while fighting to protect his daughter. The financial strain of this case now impacts his ability to continue the legal process without outside support.
Kajsa, a close family friend who helped launch the campaign, said: “I am sharing this because Sherry is no longer here to speak for herself, and because her daughter, Laila, deserves protection, truth, and safety. This GoFundMe exists to help Scott continue fighting for Laila in the aftermath of a loss that never should have unfolded the way it did.”
Every contribution, no matter the amount, will help ensure Scott can continue providing Laila with the safe, stable life she deserves while pursuing justice and accountability through the legal system.
