Kyle Pollak chatted with #Powerjournalist Markos Papadatos about his recent engagement to Hallmark’s “Finding Mr. Christmas” star Robbie Simpson, which happened in Sydney, Australia.
Sir Stephen Fry, out British comedian and actor, once said: “The most important thing is love. It doesn’t matter in the slightest whether that love is for someone of your own sex or not… It must be understood that love comes first.” This quote applies to Kyle Pollak and Robbie Simpson.
How did it feel to get engaged?
It was surreal in the best way. I was in another beautiful country with my favorite person. This was the cherry on top. I kept having to remind myself (and still do) that this is my life. Robbie is the most incredible person I have ever met and the moment felt so right. I’m so lucky to be on the receiving end of him proposing, but just as easily could have asked him. We both knew it was time. The actual moment felt like a movie, except I was ugly crying in it.
Were you nervous and/or surprised?
I was completely surprised. Robbie pulled it off flawlessly (although I had no doubt that he would). He’s always curating the perfect moment, and this was no different. I had zero idea it was coming, which made it that much more overwhelming and emotional.
What do you love most about each other?
He makes me feel the most special. Nothing with Robbie is an accident. It’s in the way he loves, the way he shows up, and the way he planned that day. We take so many adventures together and he’s so intentional in everything he does, even down to the fact that this moment was the start of another mini adventure together.
I always think of two things about finding love: find someone that makes you laugh (and often). And find someone whose eyes you fall in love with, since the eyes never change as you grow older. I’ve found those, but I’ve found so much more than that in Robbie as well.
What is your advice for others who want to pop the question?
I don’t personally have the experience here! Make it specific to your person. The most romantic thing isn’t the biggest gesture as it’s the one that could only have been planned by you, for them. Robbie knew exactly what would mean the most to the both of us and to our relationship up until that point.
What do your plans for the future include?
We’re just really excited to build something together. There’s a wedding to plan, a life in New York, kids (I say plural but he says singular). So much to come but we’re still riding the high from the engagement.
What would you like to say to your fans and supporters?
The outpouring of love we got was genuinely overwhelming. We both felt it, and it meant more than we expected. Thank you for caring about our story, our love, and our future — queer love stories should be shared far and wide.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
I’m so thankful to have found Robbie. I’m living a reality a younger Kyle would have looked up to and dreamt of — I can only hope we can be that role model of queer love for someone else.
