Veteran actor Sean Carrigan (“The Young and The Restless”) chatted with #Powerjournalist Markos Papadatos about starring in “Everyone is Doing Great” on Netflix. It was created by James Lafferty and Stephen Colletti.
The synopsis is: Five years after the end of their hit series “Eternal,” Seth and Jeremy lean on each other as they struggle to regain their former level of success and relevance. “It stars James Lafferty, Stephen Colletti, Alexandra Park, and Cariba Heine,” he said. “It’s a fantastic show. It is based on all real stories in the acting world. It is about a bunch of guys and girls who were on this fictional vampire show that was a big hit.”
“Then, then the show ends, and their careers go in the toilet a little bit, and they’re just trying to find themselves and revive their careers, and continue with their careers and their lives,” he added.
Playing Michael Niccoli
On playing Michael Niccoli, Carrigan exclaimed, “He is such a fun character. He is an easy-going guy who is living the life of an actor. He is super nice and wants to do the right thing by Andrea (Alexandra Park).”
“Then, in Season two, we find out he is, and he has a little bit of a hot temper, but you don’t find that out until the end,” he foreshadowed.
Lessons learned from the screenplay
On the lessons learned from the screenplay, he reflected, “The show is probably the funnest show I’ve ever worked on because it’s incredibly improvisational. So, they were open to many different
“We had an outline and a blueprint of the things that they want to happen, but after you hit all those beats, then it’s all you. So, that was a lot of fun,” he admitted.
“I just loved the spontaneity of it, and how free it felt to shoot it; it was so liberating. It was a fun show,” he added.
Reuniting with Matthew Atkinson
On reuniting with Matthew Atkinson in this series, he said, “It was great! Matt has a great scene that was based on an actual moment that James Lafferty had experienced right after ‘One Tree Hill.’ He went to an audition, and there was a guy at the audition that he knew, and they were both wearing the same exact clothes and probably auditioned for the same part.”
“It was good seeing him again. Matt is a great actor… we used to do a little boxing training together back in the day, so it’s always fun to see him around,” he added.
‘All American’
On being a part of “All American,” he said, “It was great. I loved working on that show and playing the football coach, Ivan Garrett. I got to yell at everybody.”
“My father was a coach when I was coming up in boxing, so I got to channel him by yelling at a lot of the players,” he added.
Stage of his life
On the title of the current chapter of his life, he revealed, “Dad Life.” “Right now, I am a dad,” he admitted. “My daughter just turned one years old. My fiancée and I are getting married in October, and we are really excited about that.”
Superpower of choice
If he were to have any superpower, it would be “to fly.” “Flight would be pretty cool, especially since traffic sucks so it would come in handy,” he said. “I would love to be able to move 50 or 60 miles an hour.”
‘The Young and The Restless’
Carrigan recalled his time on “The Young and The Restless” where he played Ben “Stitch” Rayburn. “It was a great experience and a great training ground working on ‘The Young and The Restless.’ It’s a fast-moving train, and there is a reason why it’s the No. 1 show on daytime for nearly 40 years,” he said.
“It is run so well from top to bottom. Everybody knows their jobs… it’s a fast-moving train,” he reiterated. “You just get on this train and you just enjoy the ride because it goes quick.”
Dialogue-heavy
When asked how he handles being dialogue-heavy, he said with a sweet laugh, “Oh, my God. I think my record was 67 pages. I had to memorize 67 pages, and I had it all. I was shooting multiple episodes at once. I think I was shooting three or four episodes. I had all my pages laid out across the floor.”
“At that point, the brain is a muscle. You just get good a memorizing, and you know your character, which makes it easier to memorize things,” he added.
Success
Regarding his definition of success, Carrigan said, “Success means being able to keep the lights on, and being able to pay the bills. It’s tricky in this business. You are an independent contractor, and that’s what is great about the show ‘Everyone is Doing Great’ because you see that in this new show.”
“Success is just being able to keep the lights on, paying the bills and keeping my health insurance,” he added.
Advice for young and emerging actors
For young and aspiring actors, he encouraged them to “stay the course.” “If it’s what you want to do, just always pursue it and don’t ever give up on it. I never gave myself a backup plan. There was no Plan B for me. Some people like having a plan B but I never gave myself that luxury; I didn’t want to,” he elaborated.
“Plus, I’ve had plenty of times where I’ve been down and out. You just need to figure things out, and figure out how to keep the money coming in and pick up extra jobs. When I first started making a living as an actor, I used to teach boxing. I gave private boxing lessons. I was a private boxing trainer, and that was how I made my money until I became an actor,” he explained.
