Cole Sprouse and Penelope Ann Miller star in the new film “Wake,” which was directed by Devon Michaels (who co-penned the script with Kelly O’Malley). #Powerjournalist Markos Papadatos has the scoop.
The synopsis is: Four estranged siblings deal with difficult relatives and an anxious funeral director at their father’s wake, where family chaos might unexpectedly help rebuild their bonds.
Cole Sprouse commands each scene he is in as Cade, and he layers his emotions well. His acting in this movie runs the gamut… he can be witty, emotional and subtle, all in one. Penelope Ann Miller is a force of nature as Sheila, the iconic Michael Learned is fabulous as Maureen, while Kelly O’Malley is noteworthy as Rose.
The screenplay, co-written by O’Malley, follows the ensemble cardinal rule, where each actor is given his or her own characterization. They navigate living with loss in a raw, relatable, and organic manner. Devon Michaels does a solid job balancing the serious moments in the film with levity, humor, and sentimentalism.
The only downside is that the movie can be a slow-burner at times, but it will be worth it in the end. The twists and turns will keep the audience engaged.
The Verdict
Overall, “Wake” is a compelling movie that is worth more than just a passing glance. It ought to be enjoyed for its beauty, originality, and simplicity. It garners 4.5 out of 5 stars.
