Australian firefighter Jimmy Morris raises awareness on men’s mental health, which is an ever-important topic, especially in this digital age that we are living in today. #Powerjournalist Markos Papadatos has the scoop.

In a post on “The Navy Diver” Instagram page, it stated, “Strength in Numbers… Service leaves its mark — whether it’s worn in uniform, carried into burning buildings, or taken beneath the surface. Between 1997 and 2023, 1,840 serving and ex-serving ADF members lost their lives to suicide — an average of three veterans every fortnight in Australia. These aren’t just numbers. They’re teammates, mates, and family.”

“Firefighters know this weight too. Long shifts, traumatic call-outs, split-second decisions, and the expectation to stay strong while facing danger head-on. The job doesn’t end when the siren stops — and neither do the scars,” the post acknowledged.

“That’s why Fireman Jimmy @jimmymorris_ proudly stands behind this cause — supporting veterans, first responders, and anyone carrying the unseen load. Different uniforms. Same battles. Same need to be heard. Thanks for sharing your story Legend,” the post continued.

“No diver goes it alone — and no firefighter runs into the flames solo,” the post underscored. “Mental health is no different. A check-in, a message, or a simple “you good?” can cut through more darkness than you realise. We watch each other’s backs in the water. Firefighters watch each other’s backs in the fire. Let’s do the same topside. Check in on your mates. Strength is showing up.”

In a video message, Jimmy Morris remarked, I’m a 35-year-old firefighter from the Gold Coast, Australia. I’m making this video just to create bit of awareness about men’s mental health. I’m helping out Swiss 8 and The Navy Diver by creating awareness for men’s mental health.”

“All over the world, not just with veterans, but with everyday males, mental health is something that I’ve been through myself and I’ve struggled with, and I got through it, so that’s why I felt the need to help these guys out, and create awareness around this topic,” Morris acknowledged.

“Mental health is a huge issue in today’s society,” he underscored. “I’ve lost some of my best mates to suicide, and that was due to poor mental health, and there were always people around them, and loved ones and mates that were showing them support, but mental health goes deeper than that. Depression goes deep in that.”

“It’s not just a matter of giving someone a pat on the back and telling them to go to the gym, or have an ice bath and you’ll feel better. It’s really digging deep and getting to that root cause of what the problem is, and even dealing with the emotions and past trauma or whatever is causing the mental health and trying to fix it or living with it,” Morris elaborated.

“Sometimes, things can’t be changed,” he noted. “Something in the past that may have happened can’t change and you’ve got to learn to live with that, and that was my case! I had a child with a foreign woman. Basically, she moved back overseas. I tried for years to stay in contact with him but there’s nothing I can do, and I tried everything and that was my situation and I had to live with that!”

“I’ve actually used that pain as leverage and that has helped me to become a firefighter, a fit person. I’m not a psychologist or a mental health professional, but I have been through this. I struggle with depression and mental health and I’ve lost mates to suicide… but I got through that, and now, I’m living a happy life.”

“It feels like when you’re going through depression and mental health, you’re stuck and nothing can help you. Coming from me, someone who has been there, you can get through it, and you will get through it… you just need to hold on and do the right things to get through it,” Morris expressed.
