This journalist had the chance to dine at The Great Greek restaurant in Sherman Oaks, California. #Powerjournalist Markos Papadatos has the scoop

From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere of The Great Greek feels warm, welcoming, and vibrant—as if you’ve stepped into a neighborhood spot somewhere along the Ionian Sea.

Appetizers

The food is the real star here. Everything tastes incredibly fresh, from the healthy Greek salads loaded with briny olives and creamy feta to the perfectly seasoned gyro meat that is tender, juicy, and packed with flavor.

As an appetizer, the “Golden Batter Kalamaria” was a solid selection, and it tasted crispy and smooth.

Even the simple dishes shine because the ingredients are so clearly high quality… simple yet rich in flavors and traditions. Whoever is unfamiliar with the Greek and Mediterranean cuisine in Los Angeles, ought to give The Great Greek more than a passing glance.

Main Courses

As an entrée, the Char-Broiled Sirloin Filet Beef Kebab “Souvlaki” are grilled just right, with a smoky char that pairs beautifully with their bright, and fresh tzatziki sauce.

The Hellenic Plate Specialties can be accompanied with Greek style rice pilaf, fresh vegetables, soup, Greek salad, oven-roasted lemon potatoes or French fries (“patates tiganites,” as they say in Greek).

Traditional Greek dishes

One of the highlights is their balance of authenticity, nostalgia, and comfort. The menu offers classic Greek traditional staples that are done just right—their moussaka, spanakopita (spinach pie), and fluffy grilled pita bread that is ideal for dipping in hummus or skordalia (Greek garlic sauce) or tzatziki sauce.

Portions are generous without feeling overwhelming, making it easy to share a few dishes around the table.

Service deserves a special shoutout. The wait staff are genuinely friendly, attentive without hovering, and happy to recommend favorites if you’re unsure what to order.

You get the sense that they really care about the experience, not just getting people in and out. It is neat to watch them sizzle the “Saganaki” cheese.

Desserts

At The Great Greek, one should not skip dessert. Their Galaktobureko (Greek custard pie) and Baklava are both scrumptious… especially, the Baklava, with its honey-soaked layers consisting of just the right amount of sweetness.

In the walls of The Great Greek, one will see portraits of the heroes and most influential figures from the Greek War of Independence (of 1821).

The live entertainment (Greek music and dancing) helps elevate it to a higher level.
