Robin DiMaggio talks about his new autobiography

Iconic drummer and producer Robin DiMaggio chatted with #Powerjournalist Markos Papadatos about his new autobiography “The Truth Behind the Lights.”

How did the new autobiography come about?

I reached a place in my life where I felt it was time to tell my story, the great, the good, the bad, the ugly, the fall and the rise. After four complete rewrites, I finally feel the book reflects my truth, my transparency, and what I have learned about myself and my value as a human being.

There are also some great stories from throughout my career, including my time working on The Arsenio Hall Show and Lopez Tonight with George Lopez, along with stories from working with and around some extraordinary artists over the years, including David Bowie, Mariah Carey, Paul Simon, Diana Ross, Ray Charles, Carlos Santana, Toni Braxton, Tracy Chapman, Snoop Dogg, Steve Vai and Joe Satriani.

I wanted the book to capture the full journey, both personally and professionally, including the incredible experiences, the people I met along the way, and some behind-the-scenes moments that people have never heard before.

Was it a cathartic process writing this book?

Absolutely. It was one of the most difficult things I have ever taken on. It is not easy to write honestly about yourself, especially when you are revisiting both the greatest moments of your life and the difficult experiences and learning moments that reshaped your path personally and professionally. At the same time, it was very meaningful and ultimately very freeing.

What did this book teach you about yourself?

It taught me that in life, we never really lose. We either win or we learn. Every experience, whether good or difficult, teaches us something and helps shape who we become.

What inspires you each day as a musician?

I am inspired by watching the next generation of musicians and artists come up. There are so many incredibly talented young people who are working hard, developing their craft, and fighting to keep real musicianship and artistry alive.

I am also very interested in what is happening with AI in music. Technology is moving extremely quickly, but I believe there will always be a place for real musicians, songwriters, producers, and artists who have spent years developing their craft. That commitment to music and creativity is what continues to inspire me.

How does it feel to be a part of the digital age?

I have mixed feelings about it. Technology has created incredible opportunities, but I also think we have to be careful that we do not lose the importance of musicianship, songwriting, creativity, and the human element of making music.

It can be unsettling to see technology create something in minutes that once required a team of musicians, writers, producers, and engineers working for days or weeks. I believe AI will certainly be part of the industry’s future, but I do not believe it can ever replace the human experience, emotion, and artistry behind great music.

What is your advice for young and aspiring musicians?

Never give up on your dream because of a setback or difficult circumstance. Luck happens when hard work and preparation meet opportunity. Keep learning, keep working on your craft, and be ready when that opportunity comes.

What do your plans for the future include?

I want to enjoy my life here in the United States and spend part of my time in Bora Bora, where I eventually plan to retire.

I feel very fortunate because I have experienced so many things in the music industry that I once could only have dreamed about. I have seen some extraordinary moments throughout my career, and I remain incredibly grateful to everyone who gave me the opportunity to be myself and bring my best to the table.

At this point in my life, I am looking forward to enjoying what comes next while continuing to stay connected to music and the people who have been part of my journey.

What does the word success mean to you?

For me, success means being able to look back at your life honestly, recognize both what you accomplished and what you learned along the way, and still be grateful.

Success can also be a complicated word because the higher you climb, the more attention and criticism can sometimes come with it, especially when you experience difficult moments. That is one of the reasons I wanted to write this book. I wanted people to understand the entire journey, not just one chapter of my life.

What would you like to say to your fans about the new book? What is the one thing you want them to get out of it?

I hope people read the book and understand that we are all human and we are all flawed. We all have accomplishments, mistakes, difficult moments, and experiences that shape us.

One of the ideas that has stayed with me throughout my life is the importance of taking responsibility for what you have done while also standing firmly in the truth about what you have not done.

More than anything, I want readers to come away understanding me a little better. This book contains some of the most honest and transparent words I have ever written about my life.

There are also some incredible stories throughout the book, from unforgettable moments in the music and television worlds to personal experiences that very few people have ever heard before. I hope some of the stories make people laugh, some make them cry, and others make them stop and think about their own lives and journeys.

Ultimately, I hope people come away from the book feeling inspired. No matter what chapters you have lived through, there is always another chapter ahead. You can learn, grow, rebuild, find gratitude, and keep moving forward. I am incredibly thankful for the life I have lived, the people who have stood by me, the music, the memories, and the opportunities I have been given. I am looking forward to what comes next with a full heart and a great deal of gratitude.

This ending makes the book sound much more like a full life story with humor, emotion, celebrity stories, difficult moments, and inspiration.
