Fashion designer Tony Liu served as the exclusive designer of the 2025 Mister USA fashion show. Mr. Liu spoke with #Powerjournalist Markos Papadatos about his inspirations and latest endeavors.
The finals were held on Saturday, August 30th at The Montalban Theater in Hollywood California, and Loews Hollywood Hotel served as the host hotel.
Walt Disney once said: “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” This quote applies to fashion designer Tony Liu.
What inspires you each day as a designer?
The stories in my life actually inspire me every day. Each of my collections is rooted in a personal experience or memory.
For example, the Golden Boys Collection was inspired by my time living on a college campus. I used to go on morning runs and often saw groups of student-athletes training—running, lifting, or using the rowing machines. I spent a lot of time at the campus gym and was always inspired by the energy and dedication of those students.
This collection celebrates young men who are fearless, adventurous, and authentic. I picked soft pastel tones to reflect the warmth, brotherhood, and vibrant spirit of their shared experiences.
The Star Light Collection is also based on a real chapter of my life. I was living with my ex in the suburbs, and every night we would lie in bed, look at and count the stars through our bedroom window.
That peaceful, romantic routine inspired the entire vibe of this collection. It’s all about love, connection, and those quiet moments shared between two people. The color palette—black, white, beige, evening blue, and midnight blue—reflects that intimacy, love, and dreamy atmosphere.
The Locker Room Collection was inspired by the gym locker rooms. It’s inspired by the confidence, raw energy, masculinity and self-discipline found in those locker room spaces.
Each of my collections tells a unique story. Feel free to check out more of them at tonyscollectionstore.com
How did it feel to be the official designer for the Mister USA fashion show this year?
It was a great honor to be the exclusive designer for the Mister USA 2025 fashion show. The event was truly epic and unforgettable!
Shoutout to all the contestants—representing different states—who brought my new collections to life on the runway. Each contestant lit up the runway with their energy, confidence, and unique personality. They looked amazing and truly embodied the health, leadership, and spirit of modern America. It was magical to see them shine under the spotlight.
What was it like working with the Top 30 finalists?
It was such an inspiring and fun experience. Honestly, I was a bit nervous at first because I didn’t know anyone, but they were all so friendly, professional, and down-to-earth.
I actually spent a lot of time designing and styling individual look for each finalist—making sure every outfit reflected their personality, made them feel confident and look their best. Seeing them walk the runway with confidence, style and joy in my designs was a proud moment for me. They brought the looks to life and had fun while doing it—and that’s what fashion is all about.
Fashion should be fun. I’ve even stayed in touch with some of them—we’ve become friends.
What was it like working with CEO Jino Cabrera, Scott Cabrera Carnath, and the Mister USA staff?
They were fantastic. Very professional, supportive, and easy to work with.
Anytime I had a question or concern, they were there to help. The show ran very smoothly and was a huge success, and the entire team made me feel like family. I’m really grateful to have been part of it and hope we can collaborate again in the future.
How does it feel to be a part of the digital age?
Honestly? A little bit scary at first. My background is computer science, so I was used to being behind the scenes—talking to computers.
Now, running a fashion brand, I’m in front of cameras, showing up on social media, and sharing my stories publicly. It’s been a big adjustment, but also a rewarding one. I’ve learned to step out of my comfort zone, embrace the spotlight, and connect with the world on a deeper level.
We’re living in an era where everyone is connected. The digital age makes it possible to share creativity and stories with the world in just seconds. That’s pretty amazing. It’s helped me grow not only as a designer, but also as a person.
What are your future plans for Tony’s Collections?
Continue designing – I’ll keep designing and launching new collections that tell real stories and connect with our customers. We already have many loyal, returning customers who buy every new drop, which is such an honor. It makes me so happy to see we’re improving people’s lives with comfortable, stylish, high-quality pieces.
Expand product lines – We’ve already gone beyond underwear. We now offer tank tops, socks, silk scarves, pajamas, and more.
Attend events & shows– I plan to show at major events like New York Fashion Week and Milan Fashion Week and eventually host our own fashion show. Also, I’m planing on making movies.
Support community & charity – Giving back is a big part of my mission. I’m currently collaborating with local bars and venues to host events that support the LGBTQ+ community and I will continue supporting charitable causes and donations.
What advice would you give to young and aspiring designers?
Be direct. Be bold. Be adventurous. Stay true to yourself. Tell your stories through your designs.
What does the word “success” mean to you? (My favorite question)
To me, success is about creating value for the world and helping others. It’s not just about personal achievement — it’s about impact.
That’s why I started Tony’s Collections — to create comfortable, stylish, and timeless underwear that improves people’s daily lives. Underwear isn’t just a piece of clothing, it’s a statement and a reflection of your quality of life.
I’m very proud that so many people have switched to our brand and that we continue to bring them comfort and confidence. That’s what success is: making a real difference in someone’s daily life.
Is there anything else you’d like to say or add (that we did not cover)?
No, I think we’ve covered everything. Thank you again for this opportunity! I really appreciate your time and support.
