‘Scandal’ star Guillermo Diaz chatted with #Powerjournalist Markos Papadatos about his directorial debut.

How did it feel to make your directorial debut?

It felt exhilarating and frightening all at the same time!-ultimately it was a wonderful experience- I’m hooked,i want more!

What was it like working with the cast and crew?

I was fortunate enough to have the luxury of spending A LOT of time with Mallie and Nick (my two leads) before we started principal photography-we were all Producers on the film as well which allowed us to be a part of making this movie from the inside out-the good the bad the ugly.  Mallie and Nick are stellar actors and they really shine in Dear Luke; their chemistry is infectious! And my crew rocked!

What did that project teach you about yourself?

It taught me that i can do ANYTHING i want as long as i want it bad enough and i work hard AF and treat people with kindness and respect.

How does it feel to be an actor and filmmaker in the digital age?

I suppose there are moments that some new technology pops up while I’m working as an actor or Director that reminds me that this is a new digital age of filmmaking but I don’t really pay too much attention to that stuff-I try to stay grounded in the emotional work which is the true heart of any project in my opinion.

How was your experience playing Huck in “Scandal”?

Playing Huck in “Scandal” was SUCH a special and unique experience I will cherish it forever.  being given the opportunity to play such a complex character with so many layers and so much emotional trauma for 7 seasons! was a dream come true.

What do your plans for the future include?

My plans for the future hopefully include more Directing and producing for sure. I would LOVE to direct a horror movie next..and as an actor I would really like to do more stage work.

I am obsessed with the play “The Crucible,” I have a vision of doing a filmed stage performance of this piece perhaps set in present time or in the distant future.

What does the word success mean to you?

The word success means being able to continue having a creative and artistically fulfilling life whether it is making Art or films or tv and being able to continue to push through the boundaries in those areas and hopefully bring entertainment and joy or fire into people’s lives.

What would you like to tell our readers about your new film? (What’s the one thing you want them to get out of it)

I would love for audiences to take a chance on our little movie with a HUGE heart-they won’t regret it, and walk away with a feeling of joy and hope.

I believe it is a film that everyone can relate to and see and themselves in the characters, and there is some pretty awesome stop motion animation it it! Win win.
