Emmy award-winning actress Olivia Rose Keegan chatted with #Powerjournalist Markos Papadatos about starring in new “Scary Movie” film.
The synopsis is: Twenty-six years after outrunning a suspiciously familiar masked killer (“Ghostface”), the Core Four are back in the killer’s crosshairs and no horror movie IP is safe. Marlon Wayans (Shorty), Shawn Wayans (Ray), Anna Faris (Cindy), and Regina Hall (Brenda) reunite in “Scary Movie” alongside returning favorites and fresh faces to slash through reboots, remakes, requels, prequels, sequels, spin-offs, elevated horror, origin stories, anything with the word legacy in it, and every “final chapter” that absolutely isn’t final.
Nothing is sacred. No trope survives. Every line gets crossed. The Wayans are back to cancel the Cancel Culture.
On starring in “Scary Movie 6,” she said, “It was so amazing! It’s hard to sit there and objectively watch yourself, at least for me, but I had so much fun watching everyone else just kill it.”
“Not one frame wasn’t just annihilated by everyone, so it was so much fun,” she added.
Working with Anna Faris
On working with Anna Faris as her on-screen mom, she said, “It was incredible. I’ve admired her work for as long as I can remember, and she is even cooler, even smarter, and even more talented than I could have even imagined.”
“It’s such a nice reminder when the people you look up to and admire so much are not only just brilliantly talented, but they work so hard, and they just really want to make something good, and their heart is in it for the craft of it all,” she elaborated.
“So, it was just so refreshing and so lovely getting to work with Anna. I learned so much, and I couldn’t love her more,” she added.
Lessons learned from the screenplay
On the lessons learned from the script, she reflected, “That is so interesting. Spoof comedy is such a specific world. As far as what it taught me about myself, I actually learned so much from the experience.”
“I learned so many different things from Marlon and Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Dave Sheridan, Cameron Scott Roberts, and Savannah Lee Nassif. Everyone in the cast taught me so much because I had never done a comedy before,” she elaborated.
“So, No. 1, I learned that I’m capable of doing this, and No. 2, I learned that I’ve always thought of myself as an improviser. Improv is not one of my specialties, it has always scared me but there was so much improv done in this movie, and we were all encouraged to just come in with our own ideas to play different versions of the script every day,” she explained.
“I learned that I’m capable of pulling some funny ideas out of my little noggin. So, that was really fun,” she admitted.
Stage of her life
On the title of the current chapter of her life, Keegan revealed, “Rainbows and Gratitude.” “While the title may be dumb, I just feel like moments like this don’t come along very often, especially when you’re in a firm that is in theaters, and then the movie does really well,” she said.
“I’ve been at this since I was 11 years old, professionally, trying to do acting. The goalpost always moves,” she noted. “You are never fully in the mindset of ‘Oh, I did it.’ To be able to feel yourself touching that goalpost just for a second is something that 13-year-old me would have not even believed in her wildest dreams. I think that’s really important.”
“So, I’m just trying to genuinely soak it all in, because it is pretty surreal,” she said. “It feels like a giant rainbow, and I have a lot of gratitude for this moment. That’s the working title right now.”
Keegan on Lauren Patrice Nadler
Keegan had great words about acting teacher Lauren Patrice Nadler. “While I haven’t worked with Lauren in a while, I am very grateful for everything that I have learned from her… I have nothing but love for her,” Keegan said.
Closing thoughts on the new ‘Scary Movie’ film
For fans and viewers, Keegan expressed, “I want them to get a good time out of this movie. Just sit and let your brain turn off and scape. I just hope people can laugh together. I think that’s what we set out to do.”
“I have had the good fortune to see the movie in theaters a couple of times with friends, and just hearing the audience laugh and howl together is the greatest feeling. It’s so interesting to see what different audiences laugh at, and that brings me great job,” she concluded.
