Chatting with Valarie Sion: Queen of the Discus Throw

Valarie Sion, chatted with Markos Papadatos about her 2026 USA Track and Field Championship win in the discus throw. It took place at Randall’s Island Park in New York.

She is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and the 2026 national champion in the women’s discus throw.

On her win, she shared, “Titles are really what you strive for as an athlete, so to win a national title is really special. And to have a family reunion with my husband, it has been really special.”

“Track and field requires so much focus, discipline, and sacrifice, and there are so many incredible athletes,” she added.

When asked which area she would like to improve upon, she responded, “Right now, my technique. I know that I’m capable of bigger distances. I just need to fix some bad habits, and I’m really motivated to do that.”

Advice for young and aspiring discus throwers

For young and emerging discus throwers, she said, “My biggest advice would be to get comfortable being uncomfortable. Be willing to try something new.”

Stage of her life

On the title of the current chapter of her life, she revealed, “Metamorphosis.”

Success

Regarding her definition of the word success, she said, “At this point, success means representing myself and my family well, whether it’s through my attitude, effort, or performance. It’s about trying to be the best version of myself.”

Message for her fans

For her fans and supporters, she said, “You guys are awesome. I really appreciate your support through the highs and lows. It’s hard sometimes to compete in a sport where the results are so black and white, and I truly appreciate the support through all of it. It means more than you realize. It takes a village. Thank you.”
