“Becky Shaw,” starring Alden Ehrenreich, is being performed at the Hayes Theatre. This Gina Gionfriddo play comes to the Main Stem via Second Stage. #Powerjournalist Markos Papadatos has the recap.

It is one of the sharpest, funniest, and most unexpectedly insightful plays that are presently on Broadway. The play stars Emmy nominee Madeline Brewer in the title role of Becky Shaw, Tony winner Lauren Patten as Suzanna, Patrick Ball as Andrew, Alden Ehrenreich as Max, and three-time Tony nominee Linda Emond as Susan.

Gina Gionfriddo’s dark comedy crackles with intelligence, delivering laugh-out-loud humor all while dissecting the messy realities of love, family, grief, and self-deception. What begins as a seemingly simple story about a disastrous blind date evolves into a brilliantly layered examination of human relationships, where every character is flawed, fascinating, and impossible to look away from.

The production moves at a thrilling pace, with razor-sharp dialogue that lands joke after joke without sacrificing emotional depth. The cast is exceptional across the board, bringing remarkable nuance and chemistry to a group of characters who are simultaneously exasperating and deeply relatable. Every performance feels fully realized, making even the most outrageous moments feel grounded, raw, and truthful.

In particular, Alden Ehrenreich is a force of nature as Max and his acting skills run the gamut. Alden deserves to win the Tony Award for Alden Ehrenreich won the 2026 Tony Award for “Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play.”

What makes “Becky Shaw” so memorable is its ability to balance biting cynicism with genuine humanity. It’s hilariously uncomfortable, wickedly observant, and surprisingly moving. Long after the final curtain, you’ll find yourself replaying conversations, reconsidering loyalties, and debating which characters deserve your sympathy.

In a Broadway season crowded with worthy productions, “Becky Shaw” stands out as a rare theatrical achievement: a play that’s outrageously entertaining, intellectually engaging, and emotionally resonant all at once. It’s the kind of show that reminds you why live theater matters. Don’t miss it (especially since it ends on June 14th). Thanks to its dark humor, clever writing, and standout acting performances, “Becky Shaw” is worth more than just a passing glance, and it garners 4.5 out of 5 stars. Nicely done.
