Deborah Silver chatted with #Powerjournalist Markos Papadatos about “The Lady is a Tramp,” her duet single with Diane Schuur.
How did the idea for “The Lady Is a Tramp” come about?
Steve Tyrell, who produced the recording has had a long musical relationship with Diane Schuur, and because he has also produced my recordings, he felt our voices would complement each other beautifully.
We spent a great deal of time talking about what we wanted this version to say. Rather than simply recording a classic, we wanted it to feel like a conversation between two women, but with a little sass!
What was it like collaborating together?
It was truly an honor. Diane has been one of my musical heroes for years, and sharing a song with someone of her artistry was incredibly special. I could feel her warmth, confidence, and unmistakable spirit in every note.
What do your plans for the future include?
September 3, 2026 Catalina Jazz Club – Hollywood, California. Join me will be legendary trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and an all-star ensemble led by American Idol’s Michael Orland & October 11, 2026 Carnegie Hall – New York City, I’ll make my Carnegie Hall debut with a very special benefit concert dedicated to raising funds for ALS research.
My beloved sister, Marjie, has courageously lived with ALS for 18 years! Marilyn Maye is joining me and I will be announcing soon more incredible surprise guests. January 29, 2027 Analog – Nashville, Tennessee. I’m honored to headline a benefit concert in partnership with the ALS Association at the beautiful venue where we filmed my PBS television special.
What inspires your music and songwriting?
I’ve always been drawn to songs that have something to say. Whether they’re funny, heartfelt, or deeply emotional, I love music that tells a story and connects people. I’m especially inspired by the Great American Songbook because these songs continue to speak to us decades after they were written.
My goal is always to honor the original while bringing my own perspective to it. As far as songwriting goes, I like to write about true to life stories, such as when I wrote “The Covid-19 Blues” with 12 time Grammy nominated songwriter Dennis Lambert.
What would you like to say to your fans?
Thank you. Every stream, every concert ticket, every message, and every word of encouragement means more than you know. I never take your support for granted, and I’m grateful that you continue to share this musical journey with me.
What’s the one thing you want listeners to get from this new duet?
I hope they hear more than a wonderful jazz performance. I hope they hear two women celebrating individuality, confidence, and authenticity.
To me, “The Lady Is a Tramp” is about having the courage to live life on your own terms, guided by character and heart rather than by status or expectations. If listeners finish the song smiling and feeling a little more empowered to be themselves, then we’ve done our job.
