True Hollywood Talk sat down for an exclusive interview with acclaimed film director and producer Brian A. Metcalf on the release of his newest music video “Not Around” by AUDOM.

Metcalf, best known for his 2021 neo-noir thriller ‘Adverse,’ starring Mickey Rourke, Sean Astin, and Kelly Arjen has continued his mission of producing work that today’s generation needs to see (and hear).

True Hollywood Talk: Thank you for joining us today, Brian. What sparked your interest in creating and directing this music video?

Brian A. Metcalf: Well, I got the opportunity to create a new song and work with Yoad Nevo (Sia, Ed Sheeran) again so then in order to release a single, you have to do a music video for it.

THT: Rumor has it that AUDOM is actually you and those are your vocals?

BM: Yes, it is! I go by the stage name AUDOM.

THT: What was your overall takeaway from recording the song? What do you want listeners to know about its underlying message?

BM: My inspiration came from a breakup that stemmed from a very toxic relationship some years ago. Those types of emotions are very strong.

THT: What got you interested in music? Is this your first release?

BM: I’ve been involved in music my whole life. At a young age, I began taking piano lessons, having later learned how to play the guitar. From there, I launched a garage band with friends, which we later named ‘Fructose.’ In recent years, I chose to go out on my own under the stage name ‘AUDOM.’

THT: Last year, your neo-noir thriller ‘Adverse,’ starring Sean Astin, Mickey Rourke, and Thomas Ian Nichols made numerous headlines upon its release. What would you say was the catalyst following the film that pushed you back into music?

BM: I was given the opportunity to do some new music and I thought why not? My film projects are in various stages, waiting for certain elements, so I had the time. Music has always been such a huge part of my life.

THT: Did you start your career in music or film? Which do you prefer right now?BM: While I have a love for both, I started my career in music. Yet, film encompasses music, so I think I chose to transition to film so I could have the best of both worlds.

THT: ‘Not Around’ looked like an incredibly fun and humble project. What can you tell us about your collaborators?

BM: For the song, I collaborated with multi-platinum producer Yoad Nevo. He’s worked with Sia, Ed Sheeran, Sia, Duran Duran, Giggs, Goldfrapp, Moby, Morcheeba, Bryan Adams, and more.

THT: Can we expect an upcoming, full album from you?

BM: With time permitting, I’d love to put one together!

THT: Who would you consider to be your ‘dream artist’ to collaborate with?

BM: I would love to collaborate with artists such as Marshmello, Diplo, and Halsey.

THT: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

BM: Ideally, I would like to be simultaneously working in both film and music.

THT: What advice would you as a film producer/director/writer and music artist give to anyone starting their career in either space?

BM: Get out there and just start making music or films. There is no reason why you can’t do either, even if you have no budget. I composed the entire song for’ Not Around’ in Logic Pro X. We shot the music video with my friends, at no budget. You can do it too!

THT: What’s the best advice you have ever been given?

BM: Never listen to anyone who says you can’t do it.
