‘Didn’t explain anything!’ BBC viewers blast ‘pointless’ interview on Sue Gray report

BBC Breakfast was hosted by Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty on Saturday morning. The presenting duo welcomed criminal barrister Matthew Scott onto the programme to discuss the release of Sue Gray’s report into alleged lockdown-breaking parties in Downing Street and Whitehall. However, upon watching the interview with Matthew, BBC viewers quickly took to Twitter to criticise the chat, with some branding it “pointless”.

Earlier this week, the Metropolitan Police announced it was investigating the alleged parties and gatherings.

On Friday, the Met said: “For the events the Met is investigating, we asked for minimal reference to be made in the Cabinet Office report.”

This means the report Sue Gray releases before the police probe is complete may need to contain some redactions, or could be changed.

Keen to gather a further understanding of the impact this could have on the upcoming report, Charlie questioned Matthew about the Met’s statement.

The presenter began: “The Met Police released a statement on Friday asking for there to be minimal mention in Sue Gray’s report of the parties being investigated by The Met so that the case isn’t prejudiced.

“If you can, using your knowledge but in layman’s terms, what does that mean?” Charlie asked.

Matthew replied: “Well I think the prejudice they’re talking about here isn’t the idea of prejudicing a jury at a trial because there won’t be a jury and there probably won’t be any trials.

“What the police are intending to do, if they find lockdown regulations were breached, is to issue fixed penalty notices.

“#bbcbreakfast I’m switching to the cartoons on ITV whilst Charlie draws out yet more pointless thoughts on the Gray report,” @kuheladiamond fumed.

“Matthew Scott didn’t actually explain anything. He just added to the complexities that lawyers and barristers seem to revel in and or which they get paid handsomely. #BBCBreakfast,” @Imtherealanon commented.

@Veratruth2 questioned: “#BBCBreakfast can we just have a catch up when we have the report, instead of potentially this and that from every Tom, Dick and Charlie?”

“This barrister from Bath trying to explain why the police don’t want the #SueGrayReport to cover the topic it was created to cover is just nonsensical. #BBCBreakfast,” @UnInterlocutor remarked.
