Rising star Kiori Mirza Waldman chatted with #Powerjournalsit Markos Papadatos about starring in the new horror film “Ice Cream Man” by Eli Roth.
“Ice Cream Man” follows an idyllic summer town descending into madness when an ice cream man serves kids sweet delights with horrifying results.
How was your experience in ‘Ice Cream Man?‘
It was honestly one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. Everyone on set was so welcoming and supportive, and I learned so much every single day. It was my first feature film, so getting to work with such an incredible cast and crew was really exciting. I came away with so much more confidence as an actor and with memories I’ll never forget.
What did you like most about your character?
I loved that Mia changes so much throughout the story. At the beginning she’s really focused on being popular and being seen a certain way, but throughout the movie, she realizes what actually matters. She becomes braver, more empathetic, and forms friendships she never expected. I think that made her really fun to play.
What was it like working with Eli Roth?
Eli is amazing. Before filming, I’d actually never watched a full horror movie, so after I got cast I watched Thanksgiving because I wanted to understand his style. He has such a clear vision, but he also creates an environment where everyone feels comfortable trying new things. He made every day of shooting fun and exciting, it was like being at a Halloween themed camp and he was our counsellor!
What did this screenplay teach you about yourself?
It reminded me that I really love playing characters who grow and change. It also pushed me outside my comfort zone because horror is so different from anything I’d done before. I learned to trust myself more and to stay present in every scene, even when everything around you is completely chaotic.
What do your plans for the future include?
I definitely want to keep acting and continue challenging myself with different kinds of roles. I will keep writing and releasing my own music because songwriting is another huge passion of mine (check out my song LOV5). I’m going to be releasing another song along with a music video late August, so stay tuned!
What is your advice for young and aspiring actors?
I would say, don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s, because everyone’s path is different. Don’t let rejection bring you down because it’s part of being an actor. Just having fun and learning from every audition and project is the best thing you can do!
What does the word success mean to you?
Success, to me, isn’t just booking roles. It’s doing work that you’re proud of, continuing to grow, and getting to tell stories that make people feel something. If I can keep doing what I love and still feel enthusiastic about it, I’d consider that success.
What would you like to tell our readers about ‘Ice Cream Man’? (What’s the one thing you want them to get out of it?)
I hope audiences just have a great time. Horror can be such a fun genre because it lets you experience so many emotions. One minute you are screaming and the next you are laughing. I hope everyone has fun with it!
