In the series, he considered himself to be upper-middle-class as a bank manager and he often looked down on those he saw as beneath him.
However, he was also envious of those who are more upper-class than he was.
The prudish captain was also judgemental about people who did not share his moral outlook on life.
The snooty character was portrayed brilliantly by Arthur, however, it appeared as though the actor was not too keen on the idea of Dad’s Army at first.
