Eternals cast: Who does Richard Madden play in MCU movie?

Judging by the teaser for Eternals, Richard Madden’s character seems to be the leader of the Eternals. However, that is not strictly true, and it does not seem to be accurate that his character is even the leader in the film.

Who does Richard Madden play in MCU movie Eternals?

In Eternals, Richard Madden plays Ikaris, who is known as the ‘tactical leader’ of the Eternals.

According to clothing brand Redwolf, who designed clothing ahead of the film’s release, Ikaris is: “…the tactical leader and most powerful Eternal and takes pride in keeping the other Eternals safe.

“Moral, kind and charismatic, Ikaris boasts the power of incredible strength, flight and the ability to project beams of intense cosmic energy from his eyes.

“When the monstrous Deviants return after centuries, Ikaris leads the charge to unite the scattered Eternals to stop the new threat.”

However, he is not the official leader of the group, a job that befalls Salma Hayek’s character Ajak.

Ajak has gone through many changes from the original, including a gender swap and a change of allegiance.

Ajak, like the other Eternals, can manipulate energy, have a prolonged lifespan as well as superhuman strength, and Ajax can also communicate with her fellow Eternals without words.

However, in the original comics, Ajax is a man and one who has lived longer than many of his other comrades.

He is also not necessarily the leader of the Eternals, and at times is even shown to be a supervillain as well as a superhero, with a longstanding dispute against Makkari (played by Lauren Ridloff), another of the Eternals who has also had a gender shift in the MCU.

Ajax’s job in much of the comics is to awaken the Eternals who have lived on Earth for so long they have forgotten their true selves, which could be the case for the lead in this film, Sersi (played by Gemma Chan.)

Sersi is far more fond of the human race than her other Eternals and refuses to join them for meetings in the comics.

In the film, she is seen fraternising with Dane Whitman, AKA Black Knight (played by Kit Harington) despite having a long-standing romance with Ikaris.

It may be Ikaris returns to her every so often to bring her back to the Eternals, reminding her of her god-like being.

Ikaris and Sersi’s relationship is not featured in the comics, but seems to have been created in the film, and will likely act as part of their story as the two main characters.

As for Ikaris, he has many of the abilities of the other Eternals and seems to be in charge while Ajax is more of a spiritual leader of the group.

As for the other Eternals, there is Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani) who is a Bollywood star on Earth, and Sprite (Lia McHugh) who appears to be a 12-year-old child despite her advanced years.

Phastos, a cosmic-powered inventor, is played by Brian Tyree Henry while Lauren Ridloff is Makkari, who scouts out planets.

Barry Keough plays Druig, an Eternals who can control minds and is generally disproving of his colleagues’ choice to interact with humans, while Don Lee plays Gilgamesh, the strongest of the Eternals, who is the partner of Thena (played by Angelina Jolie.)

Eternals is out in cinemas on November 5, 2021
