His Dark Materials: Lee Scoresby ‘returns’ in season 3 after tragic exit ‘Really excited!’

WARNING: Spoilers for the final episode of His Dark Materials season two revealed.

Lee (played by Lee Scoresby) spent the majority of season two of His Dark Materials desperately trying to track down the young girl he’d come to see as a daughter, Lyra Silvertongue (Dafne Keen) after she managed to transport herself to multiple worlds. Unfortunately in the final episode, the beloved character and his Hare dæmon Hester (Cristela Alonzo) succumbed to their injuries as they fought The Magisterium to ensure Lyra completed her mission to find the meaning behind Dust. However, it seems the actor who played the formidable air-ballon pilot, Lin-Manuel Miranda, 40, believes his alter-ego could make a sensational return in season three of the BBC drama.

The fan-favourite character travelled high and low, as well as being tortured, in season two as he began a quest to find Lyra.

On his mission, he discovered the young girl had found a companion in the Subtle Knife barer, Will Parry (Amir Wilson), who had travelled through a window from a modern world.

However, he was told by witch Serafina Pekkala (Ruta Gedmintas) he would need to find the boy’s father, John Parry (Andrew Scott), in order to locate Lyra.

All this and more Lee did but once he had finally arrived in the same world as the girl he had come to see as a daughter, The Magisterium were not far behind him.

With the sinister force wanting to stop the exploration into Dust, they set about trying to kill Lee and John.

Knowing how important it was for Will to reunite with his father, Lee took every bullet coming his way, leading to his and Hester’s eventual death.

Witch Serafina Pekkala found his body and laid it to rest but could it be she actually brought him back to life with her mystical powers?

Speaking about the season three, which will be the final instalment of the drama, actor Lin said: “I’m really excited that they get to finish telling the story [of Philip Pullman’s novels].

“That third book [The Amber Spyglass] is so ambitious, I can’t wait to see what they do with it,” he said.

Another added: “One of the many things I love about #HisDarkMaterials on @hbomax is how @Lin_Manuel gets to show how his talent can shine in every medium. His Lee Scorsbury is such a beautiful character representation.”

Whilst a third commented: “I would love to see @PhilipPullman do a series of Books about Lee Scoresby’s adventures before he meets Lyra. That’d be awesome. #HisDarkMaterials.

If Serafina Pekkala wasn’t able to save Lee, could it be he and Hester will return in angel form as Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) finally discovered their existence?

It’s yet to be seen if the creators of Dust origin are a force of good, or whether Lyra will have to battle them and her father, Asriel.

Season three will be eight episodes long, with the most recent instalment being one episode less due to the coronavirus pandemic bringing a halt to proceedings.

Speaking of what’s to come in the future episodes, executive producer Jane Tranter said: “We’re very blessed that we have Wolf Studios to film season three in.

“And so I think we’ll be able to do that mix of filming in a studio and visual effects work, maybe filming on location but doing builds on location.

“There’s the most amazing location for Mrs Coulter in the first couple of episodes, which I can’t talk about but it’s just amazing,” she told Radio Times.

His Dark Materials is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
