Mariska Hargitay stars as the beloved Captain Oliva Benson on NBC’s long-running procedural drama, Law and Order SVU. The actress opened up about her first date with her husband, Peter Hermann, and detailed why she ended up in tears.
Mariska became a solid member of Law and Order, having portrayed Olivia Benson since the pilot episode, which premiered in 1999.
Viewers have watched her rise in rank and use her finely honed instincts to investigate a prosecute different sexually-oriented crimes, including rape, paedophilia, and domestic violence.
These storylines moved the actress and led her to establish the Joyful Heart Foundation, which according to their website, works to: “Transform society’s response to sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse, support survivors’ healing, and end this violence forever.”
During an interview on The Drew Barrymore show, the actress opened up about another part of life and revealed how the first date with her husband went.

She shared: “It’s a little too good to be true, our first date he asked me to go to church with him.
Responding to Barrymore’s surprised face, she said: “Yeah and I was moving, and I said ‘Peter I would love to but not today, I’m moving today’ and he goes ‘C’mon it’s an hour.’
“I was so funny and I just couldn’t resist so I went to church.
“And it was that day I remember, I had this daisy flower necklace, it was June 2 and I’m crying and he thinks I’m so moved by the sermon.
She added how her then co-star Chris Maloney, who played Eliott Stabler, saw the whole thing and shook his head at their introduction.
Mariska stated: “He’s so funny and so different from anyone I’ve ever met and we had such a beautiful getting to know each other and learning how to see each other and beautiful courtship.
“Here we are 17 years married, 19 years in and still learning about each other every day.”
Two years after Mariska and Peter tied the knot, they welcomed their first child, a son, before adopting two more children in 2011.
Peter has since made countless appearances on Law and Order SVU.
The most recent of which came during ‘The Fivehundreth Episode’, which aired in October 2021.
However, Trevor Langan (Peter Hermann) is far from romantically linked to Olivia.
He’s instead a senior partner at Henshall & Langan.
The high-priced attorney came to Olivia’s rescue in season 11, when she was framed for murder by a recently released rapist.
Thankfully, fans will be seeing more of the couple on-screen together as Peter is lined up to star in an upcoming episode, which is expected to premiere in March.
Law and Order SVU will return to NBC on Thursday, February 24.
