Simu has only been on the scene for a short while, but he has already found a massive amount of fans. The new Marvel hero took on the guise of Shang-Chi in The Legend of the Ten Rings earlier this year to massive success. The movie has since made a staggering $421 million at the box office, one of the highest-grossing movies of the year. Today, it was announced a sequel was on its way.

Shang-Chi actor Simu was eager to make his point heard on Twitter when news of his sequel broke.

The Chinese-Canadian star has been very open about responding to his critics in the past, who previously suggested his film “flopped”. And this news has only spurred him on further.

He tweeted to his 785,000 followers: “Flopped so hard we got a sequel!!”

The Shang-Chi sequel will no doubt continue the story of the titular character now he has claimed the Ten Rings for himself.

At the end of the first film, Shang-Chi took the rings from his father, Wenwu (Tony Leung), before defeating an evil creature that threatened to consume the souls of humanity.

The hero was then inducted into the Avengers by Wong, Captain Marvel and Bruce Banner/The Hulk.

Shang-Chi’s sequel is officially being written and directed by the first film’s boss, Destin Daniel Cretton.

Destin also signed an “exclusive multi-year overall deal” with Marvel Studios, allowing him to develop TV projects for both Disney Plus and Hulu. (Via Variety)

Destin said: “Working on Shang-Chi with Kevin and the Marvel Studios team was one of the highlights of my life, and I couldn’t be more excited about Tara’s vision for Onyx Collective. I can’t wait to explore new stories & build new worlds with this community.”

Although the notion of a new Shang-Chi movie is exciting, Simu recently spoke out about his “fears” of being typecast in Hollywood going forward.

The 32-year-old appeared on the First We Feast YouTube channel where he ate hot wings alongside host Sean Evans.

During the YouTube event, Sean explained how he felt he had been “typecast” as the “wings guy” by his friends. Simu felt the same.

Simu said: “That’s so funny that you say that because my fear in this movie and its success – and of course it’s been very successful and I’m very happy about it – is that it will perpetuate this kind of narrative that Asian people can only lead martial arts movies. Which is not true, right?”

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is Marvel’s first-ever Asian-led superhero movie, comprised of incredibly notable stars including Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Michelle Yeoh, Benedict Wong and Ronny Chieng.

Simu added: “Of course it’s something that, you know… I don’t want people to constantly come up to me and be like: ‘Hey! I bet I could kick your a*s!’ So, I get that, I feel that – wanting to be known for other things.”

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is available to stream on Disney Plus now.
