Vikings spoilers: Lagertha’s decision to kill Queen Aslaug finally explained

Lagertha (played by Katheryn Winnick) killed one of her fiercest rivals, Queen Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland) near the end of Vikings’ fourth season.

What seemed like a split-second decision stunned fans, though not quite as much as the brutal death of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) in the very next episode.

The show’s sixth and final season is expected to air at the start of 2021, but there has been a considerable break between instalments, partly due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

For those who may need a refresher, Lagertha’s reasoning for killing the former Queen of Kattegat has been neatly outlined in a recent article on Screenrant.

Lagertha’s decision came as a surprise for many, especially as she opted to take Aslaug out with an underhand arrow to the back rather than face her head on.

Moreover, as the second wife of Ragnar Lothbrok, Lagertha held a strong grudge against Aslaug for giving birth to four sons with her former husband.

Despite vowing not to seek revenge against each other in the episode In the Uncertain Hour Before the Morning, Lagertha broke her promise by killing Aslaug on the spot a moment later.

Her potentially life-threatening decision has been debated by fans ever since, and Vikings enthusiasts may finally have a definitive explanation.

They continued: “Lagertha wanted to take Kattegat back and she did, but she also had to kill Aslaug in retaliation for pretty much destroying her family.

“In addition to that, by killing Aslaug, Lagertha carried on with the Seer’s prophecy that a woman would rule Kattegat – and she later fulfilled another prophecy with her death.”

Throughout the series, the Viking heroes often pay a visit to the Seer (John Kavanaugh), who provides them with eerily prescient guidance.

Armed with the knowledge that Kattegat would eventually be ruled by a woman, she saw Aslaug as the most likely contender to the coveted throne.

Considering her leadership as the best option for her family’s future, Lagertha chose to take out the competition.

Sadly, her rule was short-lived and fans had to endure the death of one of Vikings’ most beloved characters when Lagerther was killed by Hvitserk (Marco Ilsø) midway through season six.

Of course, her death was also foretold by the Seer, finally confirming neither Aslaug or Lagertha could escape their inevitable fates.

Vikings season 6 will resume in 2021 on History and Amazon Prime Video.
