Doctor Strange 2 theory: X-Men crossover leads into Logan

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has broken new ground with the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home. The multiverse had already been explored in the Disney Plus show Loki, but the webhead’s sequel brought characters from previously unconnected franchises on board. Now, Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness is set to do the same, with recent reshoots believed to have been used to get even more cameos into the film. Yet, the real crossover could be the X-Men, introducing the MCU to mutants for the first time (ignoring The Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver).

Back in December, there were numerous major leaks about the Sorcerer Supreme’s sequel. Most of which concerned cameo appearances, including Deadpool (played by Ryan Reynolds), Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire) and Captain Carter (Hailey Atwell).

However, the most intriguing names to crop up were Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). Unsurprisingly, the internet went crazy over the thought of seeing the classic X-Men heroes again, though one fan has made an additional connection.

It might not be a coincidence that these two characters are the same two to lead James Mangold’s Logan from 2017. That film was set in the not-too-distant future after the X-Men had long since been wiped out.

Despite Logan being the last film in Fox’s X-Men timeline, it wasn’t the final movie to release in the cancelled universe. That award goes to The New Mutants, the long-delayed spin-off that was eventually (unceremoniously) dumped on Disney Plus in the UK and Hulu in the USA in 2020.

The last main X-Men film before that was 2019’s Dark Phoenix which focused on Jean Grey becoming the Phoenix Force and putting her against the rest of the team. If these movies do connect to the MCU through Doctor Strange 2, they will likely remain as variants similar to how it was in Loki.

Marvel will be keen to bring the X-Men in with a blank new slate after Fox’s infamously messy timeline which was (sort of) explained in 2014’s Days of Future Past. Rumours continue to pour out of Marvel/Disney, so fans looking to go into the film blind should stay vigilant online over the next four months.

The X-Men films are available to stream on Disney Plus in the UK and USA. Logan is available to watch on FXNOW in the USA.

Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness will premiere on May sixth, 2022.
