DC Comics‘ 2019 hit movie Joker became a worldwide phenomenon when it was released. Phoenix took on the legendary role of Joker, Batman’s nemesis, named Arthur Fleck in the movie. His performance was so thought-provoking and evocative that he went on to win an Oscar for Best Actor in the 2020 Academy Awards. Since then, news of a sequel has been suggested by various reports.

The latest news comes from The Hollywood Reporter who recently gave an update on Warner Bros’ upcoming film slate.

The report said a new Superman movie is on the way, with Warner Bros and DC executives looking for a Black actor to take over as a new version of the legendary hero.

Elsewhere in the article the DC Extended Universe and its various cinematic universes (multiverses) were discussed.

It was noted all forthcoming DC movies will take place in the same on-screen universe, apart from Matt Reeves’ The Batman, which stars Robert Pattinson, and Joker’s “planned sequel”.

Phillips told the magazine: “We have no plan for a sequel.”

However, recent reports from The Mirror have claimed Phoenix is actively involved in the sequel.

The source quotes also claimed there would be more than one sequel on the horizon.

They said in September: “It’s still being negotiated, but the scripts are being written and Joaquin is very engaged with it.”

The source added: “[Warner Bros] plan to make two sequels in the next four years, with a long-term commitment to Joaquin and his Joker director Todd Phillips and producer Bradley Cooper.

“It’s all about getting Joaquin to accept the terms – and the biggest payday of his career by far.”

They also said Phoenix’s return would net him a staggering $50 million salary.

Joker is available to watch on NOW.
