Next James Bond ‘will be young and under the radar with key similarity to Daniel Craig’

As awards season looms, Daniel Craig and James Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson are campaigning for No Time To Die to pick up some prized gongs. But what about the next 007? The EON Productions chiefs have admitted the search will begin this year and now a trusted insider has shared what he’s been hearing about the kind of star they’re looking for to portray Ian Fleming’s spy next.

In his column, Baz Bamigboye says that “deep-cover informants have confided” in him that the stars with the biggest Bond speculation are unlikely to be considered.

Apparently Idris Elba, who turns 50 this year, is just too old now. After all, Craig was 38 in Casino Royale and bowed out at 53.

The respected Bond source said: “They want their new Bond to be young enough to make a series of films — a quintet, like Craig — with a storyline that carries through.”

With this in mind, he reckons Hardy might be too old too at 44, so what about bookies’ favourite Regé-Jean Page?

The rising star won hearts in Bridgerton, but Baz wrote on Daily Mail: “Mmm. My sense is no, no, but you never know.”

His main reluctance was the fact that someone from the world of TV is often tied down by long-term contracts.

Although it is worth pointing out that the 34-year-old left the Netflix period drama after just one season and is set for starring roles in movies The Gray Man and Dungeons & Dragons. He’s also been cast as Simon Templar in the reboot of The Saint, which was Roger Moore’s TV gig until he was cast as Bond.

Aside from being younger, Baz reckons there will be a key similarity between the next 007 and Craig.

Mark said: “The names I would shake into the vodka Martini of contenders would be Oliver Jackson-Cohen (The Invisible Man), Harris Dickinson (The King’s Man), George MacKay (1917), Matt Smith (Last Night in Soho), Paul Mescal (Normal People) and Nicholas Hoult (The Great).”

Interestingly, just last week, Deadline’s Justin Kroll tweeted that news of the next Bond could be as imminent as after the Academy Awards, which take place on March 27.

He tweeted: “While it’s been crickets on the #BondWatch scene, making it seem like this will be a long process, one source with a couple clients in the mix told me something interesting recently of when a decision may come down the pipeline, “I think we he[ar] who it is after the Oscars. Obviously taking this with a grain a salt as putting an ETA on these types of decisions never works out but interesting that some believe this won’t be an all year wait. Again this a ‘could hear a name’ by spring not a guarantee to.”
