Caitriona Balfe and co-star Sam Heughan will be back on screens as beloved time-travelling couple Claire and Jamie Fraser in March next year. Ahead of Outlander returning from its two-year hiatus on Starz and Prime Video, the show’s breakout star has addressed the all too real prospect of the drama eventually coming to an end.

Starz has confirmed a seventh season will indeed come to screens after the limited eight-episode sixth instalment wraps up next year.

However, Outlander is projected to conclude after ten seasons, in accordance with writer Diana Gabaldon’s plan for her original novels.

Before ‘Droughtlander’ is finally over in March, Caitriona opened up about how long she expects her time as Claire Fraser will last.

She told Variety: “I think as long as the scripts remain good and we still have new things to explore.”

“If we can all be excited about the work that we’re doing then that, to me, that’s gravy. So, let’s see.”

The series has yet to be given a full ten-season order to line up with the release of Diana’s novels.

Book nine, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, has just hit shelves in November and continues Claire and Jamie’s plight in 18th Century America.

Each season has coincided with a full volume of the original saga thus far, but that could change given the increasing popularity of Starz’ live-action adaptation.

Season seven will return the series to its usual format, with a whopping 16 episode run hopefully lined up for 2023.

Until then, there is still plenty of action and drama to come when Claire, Jamie and their family step up to protect Fraser’s Ridge during the American Revolution in season six.

Caitriona teased: “Jamie has a lot on his plate, too. He’s trying to straddle a couple of different political lines.

“So he’s, on one hand, trying to placate and play the British, but also he knows the British are going to lose the war so he doesn’t want to be caught on the wrong side.”

“He’s walking a really fine tightrope this season, and Sam has some amazing, amazing work and I think everyone’s going to be really excited to see that.”

The next season will pick up with the British redcoats still closing in, and Claire’s daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and husband Roger (Richard Rankin) still processing their unexpected detour.

Before Outlander returns, Caitriona is currently one of the frontrunners in the Oscar race for next year’s award season after her acclaimed supporting performance in Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast.

Outlander season six premieres Sunday, March 6 on Starz and Prime Video.
