Power showrunner Courtney Kemp has opened up on what could be in store for Tasha St. Patrick (played by Naturi Naughton) in the rest of the Starz series. After Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.) sent his mother to Witness Protection, it’s still unsure if she’ll be returning to find a way out of prison in the next season.

Young drug dealer Tariq St. Patrick will be striking out alone in the next season of Power Book II: Ghost.

After killing his father, James ‘Ghost’ St. Patrick (Omari Hardwick) in the flagship series’ sixth season, Tariq has started to follow in his footsteps in Power’s first spin-off.

Although his mother, Tasha, has remained one of his closest allies, he may have to do without her help after the whirlwind events of the first season finale.

Showrunner Courtney Kemp recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about what Tasha’s departure into Witness Protection could mean for season two.

While there’s always a chance for her return, Kemp indicated Tariq will be completely alone for the majority of Book II’s upcoming second season.

She said: “The rules of our universe are such that any character that is not dead can always come back.

“But I would be remiss if I didn’t say that part of what we want to address in the next season is Tariq’s total isolation.”

Tasha took the fall for her husband’s murder to protect her son, but their plan was threatened at the end of season one by the return of Tommy Egan (Joseph Sikora).

However, it’s currently unknown whether Tasha will be brought back to Power Book II’s second or unconfirmed third season, or in another of the show’s impending spin-offs.

Kemp also indicated Tariq and Tasha’s relationship had reached a tipping point in the last episode, culminating when Tariq killed Jabari (Justin Marcus McManus) to stop him spreading his involvement with the Tejadas around campus.

As Tariq starts to become more and more like his father, it may be better for the mother and son to stay separated in the long run.

The writer explained: “Tasha is trying to protect her son and she’s been away from him for some time, and when he squares off on her he does so as a man.”

He’s saying, ‘Look at me. Look at who I really am in this moment, Mom.’

“And that knocks her back, and Naturi does an amazing performance with that, like, ‘Oh my God, he’s right.’”

Tariq officially came of age in the first season of Power’s new spin-off, and could finally decide what sort of man he’s destined to become when his story continues in season two.

Power Book II is available to watch on Starz and Starzplay.
