Godzilla vs Kong first trailer ‘shows Mecha-Godzilla’: Release date and cast

It’s the monster of all clashes – Earth’s two greatest titans in a spectacular battle. But why are they even fighting each other? It appears nobody knows (so far) in the first tantalising trailer. What we do know is that the sight of these two gigantic beasts battering each other is what blockbuster cinema screens were made for. But is that really Mecha-Godzilla in one glimpsed moment looming above terrified crowds?

Fans are hoping rumours the mechanical, ‘robot Godzilla’ will make an appearance but it is hard to be sure from such a brief glimpse in the image below, although it certainly looks like it has illuminated teeth.

What do we know so far?

The film follows on from 2019’s Godzilla; King of the Monsters. In that movie humanity learned about the existence of ancient supremely powerful beings called Titans. It ended with Godzilla being revealed as the protector of the planet and defeating Ghidorah, compelling all the other titans to bow down to him.

The credit sequences showed the apparent dawning of a new age, with the Titans helping to heal Earth. So what has gone wrong?

Another end credit sequence showed some of the Titans heading for Kong’s home on Skull Island while a cave painting showed the giant ape battling Godzilla.

The 2017 film Kong: Skull Island had ended with humans leaving Kong triumphant in his home, so why is he shown in chains in the new trailer?

Apparently, he will only communicate with a young girl, but a new set of scientists decide they need his help against Godzilla, as they frantically try and discover why the giant monster has gone on another rampage.

The film’s official synopsis teases dark shadowy forces at play: “The epic clash between the two titans — instigated by unseen forces — is only the beginning of the mystery that lies deep within the core of the Earth.”

Originally with a March 26, 2021, release date, so far, frustratingly, the first trailer only has the following release date information “Coming soon.”

However, the blockbuster comes from studio Warner Bros which has moved quickly to start releasing its major event movies simultaneously in cinemas (where possible) and on home entertainment streaming platforms.

This was seen most recently with the dual release of Wonder Woman 1984 on the big screen and pay-per-view.

In the US the Godzilla vs Kong trailer already landed on the HBO Max Youtube account, clearly signaling the film will be shown on the streaming platform.

The official UK information says the following:

Godzilla vs. Kong will be released nationwide by Warner Bros. Pictures
