If your Virgin Media broadband is feeling a little sluggish there are some very simple hacks that could help to speed things back up again. The firm has just revealed a new swathe of tips and tricks that can boost speeds around the home and it won’t cost you a penny to give them a try.
Now, before you do anything you must first check to see just how bad your speeds are. Grab your contract and confirm exactly what you are paying for as each home will be signed up to a different maximum download speed. Then it’s a good idea to head online and use a speed testing website to make sure things match up. There are numerous options available to check your download speeds including Google’s Internet Speed Test and speedtest.net.
These sites will show what download speeds you are currently receiving. If things are running a bit slow then the next thing to try is switching off your router. Yes, the old trick of rebooting this black box can work wonders with it clearing any issues that might be going on inside.
Virgin says you should turn off the power button, (found on the back of the router), and wait at least 10 seconds before switching things back on.
It’s worth remembering that it can take five to ten minutes to reboot the system so make sure you don’t try this just before the morning’s Zoom meeting.
So, you’ve checked your speeds and given your equipment a reboot and next, it’s all about making sure your router is a good place.
Like all Internet Service Providers, Virgin says it’s vital that you keep your Hub out in the open as objects can easily block and slow WiFi. Many of us tuck the ugly black router in cabinets or behind TVs but this can really mess with your broadband speeds. Signals from baby monitors and cordless phones can also interfere with WiFi signals so you should always aim for one metre of clearance.
It’s also a good idea to keep the Hub upright, with its lights facing into the room. That way your Hub’s strongest WiFi signal goes outwards – not into the floor.
To help improve speeds further you can also switch to the Hub’s 5GHz frequency. The majority of Virgin’s hubs have a dual band feature, which means they switch between the two frequencies automatically when required. Although the 5GHz signal is slightly weaker, it is often faster than the stronger 2.4Ghz technology so, as long as you are near the router., it’s worth giving it a go.
The final piece of advice from Virgin is to change your password. If you’ve dished out this code to friends and neighbours you may find that all these devices are sucking the life out of your bandwidth.
You can change the password on Virgi’s latest Hub 3 router by following these instructions
• Connect your computer to the Hub 3.0 using an Ethernet cable.
• Access the settings page by entering the web address shown on the Hub 3.0 sticker. For a guide on how to do this, please see Configure Advanced Settings on your Virgin Media Hub.
• Click Configure your WiFi connection.
• Click the Change option next to your current WiFi network password.
• Enter a new password into the password box. The minimum criteria for the WiFi password is: 10 characters long, must include 1 or 2 uppercase letters, must include 1 or 2 numbers and must not have 8 lowercase letters in a row.
• Click Apply Changes, then close the administration interface. All computers and devices that were wirelessly connected to the Hub 3.0 will now be disconnected, because they will still be configured with the old WiFi network password.
It’s worth remembering that once this is done all of your devices will disconnect and you’ll need to apply the new password to get them all back online. If you’d tried all of this and your average speeds still don’t match the price you are paying then it could be time to call Virgin and find out what is going wrong.
